Wow. This is one of my must-visit place. Only thing is I have bad altitude sickness problem. I think it will start to hit me when I am 3000m above sea level. Tibet should be 4000+m above sea level. I would probably pengsan before I managed to snap any photos. Any possible way to settle this?

maybe u should go Mount KK first and see whether you can manage to reach the peak or not :D
if you can make it up to Mount KK, then you can challenge tibet (the lowest sea level about 3000m++) kekekekekeke

i managed to make it to Mt KK (http://genedavinci.com/sabah/climax.php). It was from the Mt KK trip that I realized I have problem when I reach 3000m+. That's where laba rata is. Was a bad experience and wasn't prepared for it at all .... and Panadols did not work. :Eyecrazy:

Tibet is like consistent of 3000m. Most probably going to hire a nurse to walk with me and having the nurse taking photographs of me. I hope they know how to use a dSLR :D

But neways, I am really keen in going to Tibet. Guess I will have to do more research on the ways to combat the sickness....

If you going to take the train than dont worry the Train will provide oxygen when reach 2000++ altitude. & before a week you reach Tibet you can take some Chinese Medician like "红景天" or "高原宁" and for sure to get your doctor advice before you go. After arrived Tibet you can easily to buy oxygen bag and you can refill it every when finish. worst case, goto the hospital as what i do. Never try never know ya. just dont be too worry.

I only have Tamron 17-50mm & Nikon 50mm with me. so i bring both. if possible get a good CPL. (i just have normal Hoya CPL, should get a Pro series). That's all I have. & sure if you have 200mm or 300mm will be good for candid or zoom. Wide angle 10-20 will b best for landscape.

regarding travel info, May be you can ask me some question otherwise will be too long for me to PM u the details and i dont know where to start :P
or can alway ask me on next TT, after Oct will be a bit too Cold but still possible to visit.

ya... some thing that will b diff than climb KK ya. will be the whole tibet was at above sea level 3000++ so the oxygen % will less (Lhasa was in the mid of tibet)

so when the train crossing XiNing (西宁) 2000++ to Lhasa (3760M) which take another 24hours and will go up and down between 3500M to the highest TangGuLa Station (唐古拉山)which 5000++M.

I've been planning for a year to get onto the train to Tibet; but going round in circles as it's almost impossible to get hold on the tickets while out here in M'sia. The queue at the station while I was in Xian early this year was miles long..and you need to book a tour with the local tibetian agency to get hold of one.

Was so tired already and thinking of just getting onto a tour from here as a last resort. Seeing your pictures has got me all fired up again...very nice takes . Thanks for sharing.

Am thinking of getting in Xining from one of the major airports in China. From there, board the train to Lhasa. My understanding it leaves about 8 pm and arrives Lhasa the evening after. Am I right to say that the extraordinary scenes from the train would be from this stretch onwards?

Would you mind sharing your itinery and accom while in Tibet?..and also the local guide/agency you used while in Tibet.?

Hi! Glad that you enjoy my photos n your Silk road photos also very nice.
Seem like both of us also like travel so much. Silk road also one of my "must go" Trip. I have been to Xian but bit silk road coz have no time.

Yes, it is impossible to get the ticket & Tibet permit at M'sia. except that you gonna try out the online agent (which will cost u more & risk).

due to the train to Lhasa (departure from Beijing, Shanghai, ChangDu, Guangzhou) only make few stop for the whole journey like Xian, Lanzhou, Xining etc. & you cannot make reservation , u need to Q at the station 10days b4 the departure date. not easy to get ticket hard or soft bed ticket from xining (coz most of the ppl r going to Lhasa, if xining they can get other train)If you have no friend to help u on this, I will have few suggestion:

1) (if u have time) reaching you departure city and try out ur luck on the tickets (or only get the travel agent to buy the ticket at that time (at least u know who u pass the money)) grab any ticket that you can get.

2) Take flight to Lhasa & come back with the train & u will enjoy the same scenery as well but not that exciting lo coz u have already go ard tibet :D

Ya, the extraordinary scenery was after Xining only. (actually 格而木station).
& if you take the train from Beijing then reaching Xining will b 8pm (ard that)

I m staying at Dong Chuo Youth hostel most of the time in Lhasa.

my trip 15days:
Day1: depart from KL to Beijing by MAS
Day2: depart from Beijing to Lhasa by Train
Day3: pass by Shijiazhuang - Xian -Lanzhou- Xining
Day4: beginning of 青藏铁路 -pass by Golmud - Naqu - Lhasa (this will be the begin the extraordinary scenery like Kekexili, yuchu mont, TangKula Mont (the world highest station) etc.
Day5: rest in Lhasa (to avoid Altitude sickness, anyway i m sick :p)
Day6: Lhasa - Jokhang Monastery & Ramoche Cathedral temple & Q for Potala Palace.
Day7: Lhasa - Sera Temple & Potala Palace.
Day8: Hired a car with driver goto Gyangtse, overnight at Shigatse
Day9: Tashilhunpo Temple at Shigatse, goto Yamdrok Yumtso Lake & go back to Lhasa
Day10: Lhasa-Yangpachen - DangSiong - Nam-Tso Lake - Lhasa
Day11: Lhasa - Drepung Temple & shopping
Day12: Train back to Beijing
Day13: Train
Day14: reaching Beijing 8am - go ard Beijing & shopping & book store
Day15: Beijing - KL

err....i really dont mind to share but will b a bit too long to type, y not we can come out to have TT next time so we can share more of our trip experience ya.:D

hi, cs, nice photos u had here... :)

i oso just back from 20days road trip from Chengdu to Lhasa (川藏线).

Actually regarding the high altitude sickness, i find that most of the time are due to self thinking/worrying... during my trip this yr and last yr, most of the time we overnight at >3500m without any problem. just dont ever rely on oxygen, treat as normal altitude, it will b fine.

oh ya... taking the 红景天 might help to calm down.

and hopefully next yr i can manage to travel to Ngari area, that is south west part of tibet, 1 of the most difficult road in china (新藏线). any1 wanna join me? :D:)

U just came back also, mind to share your photos as well??
May b i m first time to that high altitude area & i m big size among my group may b that is the reason to get altitude sickness. I agree with u we must b positive & not too worry abt that sickness & that what i alway told my group member as well....end up i m the 1 who get it, so as i said hard to tell lah...we dont know how our body react the the altitude at the first time. :)

so great that u can cover most of the places in tibets. hope i can join u but will c how lah... :D

Thanks so much for the very helpful info/tips. Had crazy idea of maybe start journey from Golmud, but figured it's gonna cost me a bomb to get into Golmud in the first place, so doesnt make much economic sense.

Think I'll start off either Chendu or Xian and get into Xining and start from there.

Was also thinking of doing an overland from Xining into Lhasa..

Yeah, If I'm in KL next ( assuming you in KL), we'll go TT and share travel tales. Right now, am 330 km away!

How the road journey like?...anything much to see/experience between Golmud and Lhasa? If there's nothing much, perhaps not worth the time to do the road travel?.. I'll take the train.

You're right in the high attitude thing..most of us were ok while we were in Western Sichuan, except when we get into long stretch of strenous activities. Remember the final approach up Huanglong was a real challenge ...have to stop every 10 steps!!!!

Golmud? i suppose u mean 格尔木,which is in QingHai province. No, I actually travel from Chengdu to Lhasa via route 318, that is east (Chengdu) to west (Lhasa), not north(QingHai) to south(Lhasa). Along the route 318 actually got quite a number of interesting places, which are well worth a visit. :)

u r welcome. ya, it will b best if u overland from Golmud to Lhasa, coz u can stop anywhere u like to take photos but another way more challenges which some area was totally no ppls, if all guy will b ok..but if got some ladies with u better u can get a "trusted" driver or u r in a group of ppls. btw, my choice between Chengdu & Xining - I will choose cheng du (this is one of the guest house well recommend from some LP kaki: Sim (http://www.gogosc.com/house_cn.asp) (i nv try b4)

agreed with ckc, the route he took was not pass by Golmud. if u take car u wont pass by Golmud, but u take train will.
no matter from Chengdu to Lhasa (川藏线)(Car) or Golmud - lhasa (青藏线/青藏铁路) (car or train) both i believe have the diff scenery & sure both also good.

Eeer..sorry, I can't read Chinese text..only recognize the last character that sounds like "muk" Yes. Golmud is in Qinghai. The route I was talking about is via Tuotuo River / Nakchu. The road journey take 5 days to Lhasa vs 2 days from Xining via train.

You must post some pix of ur journey via route 318 for us to see..

The agent I enquired about the trip said nothing much to see between Tuotuo River / Nakchu, and if one get sick along this stretch, susah lah. He advise better take train. But am thinking ...the wilderness is so tempting, but at the same time KS sikit juga...

Talk about horror story in China, hubby kena hypnotised in Dali before, gave a few hundred US $ away before I went and dragged him away. My friends had a real drama being driven into some remote village by a supposedly tourist van and had gangster-looking guys walking towards them.Luckily one of them had the guts to jump into the driver seat and drove off in the van and ran for their lives!

Where I am; is as south of the peninsula as one can get...I can see Raffles City on a clear day!

IMHO, i suggest u take the train also, how ever the scenery of Kekexili r best and also Tangkula Mount r awesome, but really not easy lah.. the time my train across TangKula Mount station snowing some more.

If take train, whether from Beijing or ChengDu also will connect to Xining station & use the same route to Lhasa.

after reached to Lhasa & let ur body get use to the environment, then u can actually start plan you trip out of Lhasa (make sure u buy ur return ticket b4 u go out of lhasa, otherwise u may not get it when u r back.)

wow..southern ya....on the Island? if u come to KL...can alway let us know & we call a TT :D
good luck ya.

Thanks, Glad that u enjoy it. The food in Tibet mostly Tibetan & ShiChuan food, so will be a bit spicy which i think no problem for M'sian. Food over china alway too oily for us. & due to in high altitude, Tibetan need more meat (Yak) to generate heat & energy.

Golmud? i suppose u mean 格尔木,which is in QingHai province. No, I actually travel from Chengdu to Lhasa via route 318, that is east (Chengdu) to west (Lhasa), not north(QingHai) to south(Lhasa). Along the route 318 actually got quite a number of interesting places, which are well worth a visit. :)

Went to your web-site..your opening pix is a real "WOW":tongue_roll:

Think I've done some of the places I see in the pix posted there...not sure if it's route 318 tho. Went to parts of Western Sichuan to Kanding, Tagong, Siguniang and some Glasier ( damn, the name just eludes me now!).. wait..Ah...I think it's called Hailougou or something like that.

ya some of them can speak English, otherwise all the western traveler will have problem to travel in Tibet. Just that u need to spend more time in communication & to make the things clear & sure u may not have the best deal some time. basically, 2 weeks trips but only have 7-8 days in Tibet (full 4days in the trains + 1 day arrive, 1 days depart & 1 day buffer)
my 15days trip i have spend ard RM3-3.5k/person which included my air ticket, train tickets & all expenses.

but i stay in budget hostel.. food is cheap

may be you can draft out your plan & may b i can give u some suggestion. ;)

I would be probably following your "track". :p But I plan to start from Chengdu instead, take train to Lhasa via Xining lar.

due to i alway go for budget travel (no money mah) so some time may not cover some spots.

Do you know Chinese? if yes, it will help u save some money also :D like shopping or when u rent a car (normally the charges foreigner more expensive & when u can speak mandarin they will think that u r chinese which from diff state)

I dont mind you take my itinerary as reference but dont need to follow all coz you will face diff situation when u travel. u can find my itinerary in this thread earlier pages (http://www.shutterasia.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4691&page=4) I will advise you do more "home work" & plan out more route (in tibet) so you have more choice when u face any change in your travel.

no matter u start from BEijing, ChengDu , SHanghai , Guangzhou etc. also the same coz the time of travel almost the same & just few hours diff. (from 48hours - 56 hours) all train will follow the ordinary route and toward to Xining station & start from Xining station will be consider Tibet track (青藏铁路), basically your only will c special scene start from 2nd days.

No, the train wont at the world highest station 唐古拉山, no matter which train u take from it only stop 5-6 stations for after Xining, it only stop at Xining西宁, Golmud格尔木 & Naqu 那曲.

CSJian,

I am trying to confirm my trip to Tibet this Sept/Oct...

My planned route is fly Spore-Chengdu-Xining
Train in Xining-Lhasa.
Fly out Lhasa-Chengdu-Spore

I am thinking the train sector from Xining- Lhasa will max the views en-route and also help in the aclimatisation(spelling?).

But the Xining-Lhasa train ticket still can't be confirmed. My agent now is suggesting fly in Lhasa and train out Lhasa- Xining instead. Due to the timing difference, will the best sceneries be passed during the night at this sector?

I am thinking there must be a reason why most tours are taking the train in instead of out.

Would you be able to advise?

Thanks in advance!

CSJian,

!

My father told me that he read in the Chinese papers that the train's slow ascend helps people cope with the thinner air more easily due to the slow change than flying into the high altitude directly which can shock some people...

Hi Ah Mah

Glad to know that u have planned your trip to tibet. sorry for the late reply, was bz on recovering my HDD which all my photos saved inside. :(

not to advise, but to share some of my experience after get back from the trip. & hope it will benefit u too :)

basically, lhasa-Xining tickets is easier to get as compare to Xining-Lhasa, that is due to Lhasa is the departure or 1st station, whereas Xining is an middle station for the train, u only can get tickets if anybody get down b4 Xining.

Timing- I still prefer Xining-Lhasa rather than Lhasa-Xining, bcoz u will have more chance to view the nice scenery, especially when you pass the Golmud格尔木 to Lhasa, it is a day time.

Alternatively, u can consider to start from Chengdu (which u need to spend 1 more day in the train). it is easier to get tickets.

My recommendation, take the "Going" train only. after u have visited so many nice place in Tibet, by the time when u return u might feel tired or getting bored oredy :p

My father told me that he read in the Chinese papers that the train's slow ascend helps people cope with the thinner air more easily due to the slow change than flying into the high altitude directly which can shock some people...
ya, the train will help as compare to plane. However, i started to have mountain sickness when the train reached Xining, & which the train has not provide oxygen yet. Actually u will feel unwell oso when the train speeding so fast and it didn't provide oxygen. :-S

This is what I suspect from my comparison of the train stops and scheduled time.

Thought I'll have better use of the 1 day exploring Xining instead.

One more reason to shorten the train route . Was trying to stretch it by starting from Golmud...but knew the chance to get tickets is like zero.

Xining at 2,500 m + also can get altitude sickness in train?..Maybe different in train. I was ok at Huanglong 3600m+ except at the very top end and after like 1 hour of trekking. Without exertion, most of us were ok even at about 4000m+ when on some west sichuan mountain stretches.

Ya, shorten a day sound good, & I m ok when i m at Ali shan at Taiwan also ard the same altitude but dont know the body react when at Xining. So I suggest u to rest more & it is good that u can spend a day in Xining let your body get use to the altitude then only proceed to the higher, so when u r at Xining dont rush urself & make ur body too tired. ur destination is Lhasa :)

reminder, body will act diff-ly every time some ppl 1st time in :Lhasa ok but 2nd time got sickness also. But dont too worry abt the sickness & remember to c doctor if u feel not will immediately. :) btw, u can get some Hong Jin Tian (红景天) b4 or when u at Tibet it will help too.

i think that depend what u plan to take. for me, I only bring 17-50mm & 50mm with me, coz for me mainly i like to take landscape & some street shoot when i m travel .
for my Tibet trip, most of the time i use 17-50, try not to change lens too often to reduce the chances my sensor got dust.

Hi Csjian!

I am heading out to Tibet via the train from Xining early Oct.

Any advice re cameras, batteries and/or sd cards to prevent them crashing out ?

I've learnt my lesson in Huanglong, the SLR just died on me, but the Pns was still working.

Keeping the camera inside jacket for while helps a llittle , but not just for about 1 or 2 shots b4 it went dead again.

Glad to hear that u r heading to tibet soon. I have no problem with my Nikon D70s when i m in Tibet, may b i went on Sept which not that cold. May b u should try to keep it in ur bag when u r not use. I use Digimax III which with 80GB HDD to backup my CF when it is full. 3 x camera batteries but one still in plastic. remember to bring ur CPL & also sun glasses with PL as well.

when i m in Tibet i try not to change lens that's the reason y most of the time i only shoot with 17-50mm.

oh..that guy with orange shirt is Tibetan & also my driver, another 1 is my friend. we r waiting at road side to wait for the timing for "speed trap" :D.

The speed trap in Tibet not by the "speed limit gun" but with timing (manual) mean no matter how fast u drive u cant reach the next check point before the time been given by the 1st chk point :P

yo bro, i really dint realise a 17mm wide can provide such quite wideness... wondering if 12mm or 10mm will be even wider.... i actually confuse and dunno which to buy... a 12-24 or a 17-50 f2.8
