I Loved my 40D. Overall it is a worthy upgrade from 20D for the following reasons:

- Super fast focusing AF
- Larger 3" LCD helps to review taken shots accurately
- Improved ergonomics
- More options to tweak for different situations
- Maintained the legendary high ISO control which is known in 20/30D
- Faster FPS means that I can take more shots for action photography
- It's generally faster in all areas

My only gripe is 40D not a Full Frame.

Don't think so. Because when I first bought the 30D together with 17-55 and 70-200, I had same problem. Sent them to Paremba, and they confirmed 70-200 2.8L IS got focusing problem.... Brought back, and I'm happier ....

Now, same lenses but got focusing problem with both.... so got to be the 40D body..... Anyway, nothing to lose.... maybe sending them to midvalley canon this sunday....

So you're saying that your 70-200 2.8L IS was actually calibrated by Canon fo use with your 30D. If like that, it makes sense that now it needs to be recalibrated for a new body;)

Until today I never use the live view. For me if I want to use Live View might as well use PNS cameras. SLR are unique because we use optical viefinder and that classic feel taking photo is part of the joy and fun.

The big screen on 40D is super useful to judge the photos taken on the fly and this helps reducing errors.

Hmm..IMO for image accuracy judgement it's only helpful if the larger LCD size comes with higher resolution. It shows artifact esp on the skin color and tone ( although the image's good after downloaded to view on comp screen).

I havent had the chance to really utilise the live view but i think its gonna be useful when doing manual focusing for macro where u can enlarge the subject. Also it's gonna be useful when u need to do shooting from very low angle or very high angle. Or very weird angle where it's not possible to aim the subject with your head glue to the view finder.
The only reason i still prefer conventional taking the pic thru viewfinder is stability ( when the camera, my hand and my head become ONE lol)

I find the LiveView uber useful. That's cuz I do loads of high angle and low angle shots during a wedding coverage. So, LiveView is a feature I welcome with arms wide open. Imagine this, I was shooting a wedding alongside 3 other Nikons (D80, D200 and D70s). I switched on LiveView and shoot from high up - looks great, well composed. Nikons all shook heads. :P (at least at the moment I can bitch about this :P)

I dont see how LiveView can be compared to PNS. We're moving on a digital age now, and should be glad and embrace all the techs thrown at us at this very fast pace. Otherwise we'd be kinda jurrasic dont you think? Imagine - say maybe in 20 years time... there might be no more DSLR as video recorders might just catch up with Uber HiDef and gazzilion megapixel counts where one can pause the scene, and save it up as JPEG. And all this can be done at 10x the tone definition range of our DSLR.

How long should I charge my battery for first time? :?

batts are rec. to be charged for 8 hrs before usage.
I did 12 on mine.
so far a fully charged batt on mine can do between 800-1000 shots with frequent usage of LiveView, 4-sec preview of pics taken, and constant on-shoe flash usage.

You see, I'm trying to snap my nephew who is constantly moving. I'm trying to get pics like those shown in the sports section whereby you could still see their legs and hands (no blurry vision). But in the end, all I get is blurry hands and legs or even head because he is moving while his pic is taken. I need some suggestions on the setting. Thanks.

Yes you can still use AF when the LiveView Mode is on. However, the AF is not based on how you use in the viewfinder. It will focus on subjects which falls in the small square box in the middle of the LiveView mode (which is bigger than the small dot in the viewfinder.

The problem is, several WB icons are not display on the LCD... the missing WB icon are cloudy, tungsten, custom and Kelvin.. other than that, the icons appear on LCD screen...
The 1st time I bought it last 3 weeks ago.. it working fine... but after I done a custom setting.. it's gone...

I'm using a 350D now with a 17-40 f4L. I've been using this 350d for a year now and i'm wondering if the 40D is worth the buck. I'm starting to feel the limitations of my camera esp shutter lag + flat colour (this makes my photos NEED photoshop) :( Any advice would be gladly appreciated!

here are some props and slops i can convey from my personal experience with migration from 350D to 40D:

Props:
1. Bigger size equates to better handling. Add a grip and you feel so much more confident
2. 14bit image give much more vibriant colors. images look uber good even before PP
3. 3" LCD gives preview so much better
4. LiveView is priceless for me esp for wedding shoots ie. weird angles.
5. Noise level also low thanks to Digic III
6. The large viewfinder makes me almost completely forgot about my 350D (i know it sounds bad)
7. 6.5fps is sweeeeeeeeeet

slops:
1. large RAW files which average at abour 10-13MB per file makes post processing a bit of a pain. not sure if upgrading PC will help much on this but im already using a notebook with 2gb of ram plus other graphic essential hardwares.
2. maybe i would bitch about the LCD screen quality but its bearable-lah

hope this helps. i think aaronfoo would be able to be a witness on how 40D overshadows a 350D :P

sRaw is something like shooting S size Jpeg so u wont be getting big size like L good for 4R picture.. dont get it mix up :) for best quality and higher resolution go for the normal raw, shoot sRaw only when u want to save space and compromise a bit on the resolution :)

FYI guys, after 4000 shots I hit the famous Err 99.. Encountering it frequently until I update to firmware 1.05. So far so good (after another 500 shots) after that...

lets say i have budget for a brand new EF 17-40 F4 L or a used EF 16-35 F2.8 L.. which one would be a better buy and why.. btw, the used 16-35 would still be more expensive but still can squeeze in (new one is way off the budget).. i'm not using it for any particular event.. i have to admit after borrowing my cousin's L lense, the "feel" towards the lense is so different.. btw, the one i played with is the F2.8 but unfortunately my budget is only towards the F4.. maybe some photo samples?

Its less sharp or a little blur from my view.

Try to look at this comparison (http://www.shutterasia.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7629)between the film kit lens and L lens.

But I think this is a very good lens for landscape, esspecially a night.

It would be easier to enable the burst mode if your taking pictures via AE Bracking mode.

But if burst mode is swith off, then you have to press the shutter 3x.

The sequence of each shot by default would be Normal, -1, and +1 (it can be changed within the Custom Function Menu C.Fn I :Exposure (Bracketing sequence = -1,Normal,+1)

Well, you could always opt for Body + 18-55mm which will cost your RM1k++ less.. :D

Bought mine in Jan at Foto Miami in KL Plaza - Body only RM4,200 free 2G Ultra CF card, Canon camera bag and Selphy CP750 printer. If body only without "freebies" (somehow costed into the price you pay lah), I think the price should be less than RM4K now.

chelleinc, mine is showing 1600. IMHO, prolly you might wanna check your firmware ver? mine is 1.0.5...usually if something not right my first troubleshooting step is to see if there's anything to be upgraded...:P i'm not a pro in photography though...just my 2cents...

i use the CF card that given for free by the camera shop. how to format CF card using camera? no instruction on camera manual on how to format it. sorry i ask a lot of Q

no problem to write/record and highlight is already disable an i already delete all camera setting but the problem still occurs.
The solution is go back to the shop if they cant solve it then ask for a new body lorrr hehehehe hopefully can


and for ST i think we need a segmen on "camera workshop" for a person like me (totally new) share or check the equip prob with others (and the sifus give advise) b4 we go to back to the shop. hehehehe just my 2 rupiah

if iso speed is displayed as 16oo, go to menu and turn off Highlight Tone priority.

Hi 40D-ers sifu-s/experts,

I would like to check are the 40Ds C1/2/3 Dial function able to keep the: exposure metering and also pic style separately compared to the Creative Dials (P/Av/Tv)? Example: When I'm in Av mode I set the exposure metering to Evaluative and the Picture style to Standard but when I dialled it to C1 the camera will revert to what I've preprogram the exposure metering to Spot and Picture style to Landscape? When I dialled to Av mode back it revert to Evaluative and Picture style to Standard. Is this do-able?

Reason I ask the question is I found my 450D lacking of this and I was thinking of upgrading to 40D if it has this feature. May someone help me out here? :D thanks....

Hehe, I'm not sifu but I can tell you- yes.
And you can adjust/ change any settings too during using the C1, C2 and C3 function.:)

i juz got a used 17-40mm lens for my camera. However, i found that the photos tend to be a lil softer. Do i need to send my lens and body for calibration, alignment and color adjustment? Any idea how much it cost?

fyi, my camera has the firmware version 1.0.8.

[Wyldkard81]

New proud owner of a 40D. Still trying to fiddle with the tonnes of new functions (previous SLR was 350D). However, i compared my 40D with my friend's latest toy, Nikon D90 and found that the pics in my Canon 40D tend to be a bit soft, even though with maximum sharpening. Wondering whether this is just canon construction or there is more meddling with the 40D. Hope owners of 40D could help me. Thanks.

I just bought 40D...and I got this soft kind of focus things and not
with 400D...and yes I agreed the focus is faster.

What can we do or what should I do to get sharper picture. It seem my picture is not sharp..

I'm using Tamron 17-50mm aperture F4... I know if I used f2.8 the picture will be a bit soft... so push the F a bit.

BTW... using this lens with 400d the picture look sharper.

I just love snapping pics and still havent grasped the technicalities of photography yet... but still, itchy backside la.. especially if you think it's a GOOD DEAL.

Also, would the 40D be compatible with my speedlite 430EX?
