i have a 75-300mm non IS version, is it necessary to get a monopod to support my camera when attaching the lens?

Nope. That lens is light and you can comfortable shoot hand-held. Contrary to popular belief, a monopod can be a hindrance but it is necessary because for heavy lenses from the 300mm f2.8 IS and bigger, cannot be hand-held. Not for long anyway. So the monopod becomes necessary.

Yah monopod is not so much about stability, it's more about weight and saving your arms/neck.
Monopod is very useful for 2 things, motorsports and fashion/catwalk as you have your camera in the same position most of the time so you can keep the camera in place with the monopod rather than lifting your camera up and down to your eye all the time.

and if you're climbing mountains or hill, some monpods can unleash a spike at the tip where you can use it to climb :-D else use it as a weapon to ward off predators in the wild

Buy a walking stick, slap in a head and use it as a monopod.
I know someone who has one years ago. Much better as it serves better as a walking stick - a monopod is sometimes not strong enough.
