The picture looks blur especially the bridge...may be the aperture f/6 has not enough DOF. Do u manage to reach the bridge? Btw i have seen this bridge from 'Baywatch'...correct me if am wrong.
Seems a little soft to me. Have you applied USM?

Was fighting a 30 mph wind at that time and also I was testing out an older Nikon D1x with 28 - 70 F2.8. The lense was especially well worn and I was just learning the feature set of the Nikon as I usually shoot Canon.
All Pier looks the sam in the US as it has to conform to some standard (California code) and I dont recommend swimming in that beach as it has strong under current and not to mention 30 degree F water.
