Jewel spider, or a spiny spider, scientific name is Austracantha minax or Gasteracantha minax. Spotted in my garden, extremely TINY, and it was windy. I was lucky I got some relatively sharp pics. :P

Here's a shell of a spider,

844

Yum lunch. (Cant tell what it is, cant be a lynx as there's no spikes on its legs)

845

Something I spotted on my garage door while taking the garbage out last night, ran up and grabbed my camera. Was unknown till I read this (http://www.xs4all.nl/%7Eednieuw/australian/huntsman/Huntsman.html) (scroll down a bit), I think it's a Huntsman.

846

That's all, hope you guys enjoyed the pics. :)

EDIT - April 17th

Here's another spidey, currently unknown. See page 3 for more details

Thanks to all that viewed. :)

Jackjack, yes that's real, no photoshop, that's a lynx spider nest, or whatever you call it, and those are small baby lynx spiders. :D

A friend of mine remarked that something so pretty shouldnt ever grow up, as lynx spiders are quite scary. :D

Wahaha, my favourite little critters!

Some people believe that spiders bring good luck...if you have that many species of spiders lurking around your home, maybe it's time to dabble a little in the stock market! Hahaha!

Oh yeah, gotta watch out for the DOF...and maybe the composition as well. Other than that, great series! Spiders sure aren't easy to shoot...

Aaaarrrggghhhhhhhhh ! ! ! I gotta get me a macro lens ... !

Beautiful series, CM

My picks
a) #3 of that orb family member
b) the slings (never imagined slings could be that colourful...!) and #4 (the lynx - one of the sharpest and best I've seen)
c) #4 of the spiny - looks like a crab LOL
d) molt & lunch

carry on ... !

Thank you, especially coming from a sifu like you. I was just lucky to spot that.

#2 set is simply amazing! baby spiders?

Yes, I believe they're lynx babies. (they resemble Lynx's, and some googling revealed they do have multi-colored babies)

I have a rather big backyard, so there's lots of spots to explore. :D I used to be creeped out but dont worry these are all non-toxic spiders that pose no danger to humans.

Actually I missed focus and focused on the spikes of the Lynx, oh well, hahaha. Btw, what's a sling? :?

I understand basic rules of composition, it's just that at times, it's better to get some photos rather than no photos at all, especially under windy conditions, which was the case while snapping the Jewel. :) The huntsman was resting on my garage door, it was pitch dark and I couldnt miss an oppourtunity like that so i grabbed my camera and switched on all lights outside. Some remarked that it looks dead, trust me, it was well alive. :D

People who love to keep spiders as pets have their forums and buy/sell/trade info is available, too. Sling is short for spiderling. :D

Waaah! LOL, not that good lar ...
It'll take an entomologist, more specifically an arachnologist to be able to do so :D
www.arachnology.org is pretty informative with many informative links
.... fwiw, based on the chelicerae of that moult, it could be any of our jumping spiders. btw, just found out from Wiki that spiny crab-looking spider is another member of the orb weaving family :D

Just shot earlier today, cant seem to ID it. It's about 7mm wide, makes a real big web. Others are welcome to contribute. :)

Closeup,

858

I'm gonna make this my new background, bye bye dragonflies. :D

A wider shot,

859

Looked up and saw a real interesting web above the pine trees(where I find all the spiders, hehe), so i ran in and grabbed the ladder. The web is circled in red in case you cant see it.

CM...I think it's a garden orb-weaver....normally identified by the shield-like abdomen, large web and pointy bum.

Of the Araenus or Eriophora family...

Possibly, though I've been googling garden orb-weavers and I cant find one matching this, a gold/black/white sample. Might be a new species, which I shall call Araneus Rempitus :rasta: (malaysia boleh!)

(I can dream, hahaha)
