I'm just wondering , nowadays photographers also include photoslide shows to be shown during the wedding dinners and we usually burn in DVD for the couples. Question is , I understand the songs which are included in the slideshows have copyright. So is it OK to include them in without breaking the law??

Legally no it's not ok as you don't own the rights to play the song in public.
Even if you've purchased an original CD you aren't allowed to redistribute or use it for public performance.
Better to use 'open source' license free songs or those with expired copyrights.

What about playing bits and pieces of the song and not the entire song? For example, you don't want to bore people with a 7 minute song so you just use a portion of it?

Yes it is definitely illegal especially if they have no agreement with the copyright holders.

Yeah, maybe it is illegal to play the song in public (like a restaurant).. how about just compiling to a DVD for the couple's personal use? It's really funny giving couples a DVD photoslide without any sound! hahaha

It's illegal you are redistributing copyright material that doesn't belong to you.
And yes those restaurants are breaking the law and so are the bridal houses, but no YOU can't sue them as you don't own the copyright to the songs being infringed.

if you plan to play music in public areas
here is what you can do
contact http://www.macp.com.my/licensing.html,
MACP's licence is required by any person, firm or organization who does or causes or authorizes a public performance or a communication to the public of any musical work controlled by MACP. The expression "public" is not defined in the Act. However, pursuant to numerous Court decisions, it is clear that any performance not given in domestic or quasi-domestic circumstances is a performance in or to the public.
A licence is needed regardless of the manner of use, be it live or recorded and irrespective of whether a charge for admission to a performance is made. In respect of the public performance right, generally, it is the proprietor of premises at which music is performed or the promoter of the performance, who is responsible for ensuring that prior to any performance in public of MACP's work, the appropriate licence is obtained.
most Established restaurants, hotels, shopping malls etc clubs, disco's pay a fee to MACP for their music or video shows. This is especially so if its in a public area. Some renowned shopping complex i heard requires this to be mandatory for all outlets to be licensed by MACP if they are to play music.
the link above provides all general prices and fees if in doubt do call them
