Hi QS, frankly I don't really know what I'm looking at. To take a wild guess, is it some sort of cactus? Your title says Uniquely Born ... does it refer to those "cactus buds"? Geez, I'm being a dork here ... what are they?

Anyway, I looked at your exif & it says iso100, f8, 1/30s manually set. I'd say it's rather blur due to the slow shutter speed while shooting 259mm (IS lens ah?). Bet your cam wasn't on a tripod ('cos it would've let you shoot any speed you wanted). If you had to shoot handheld, you could've opened up the aperture (foregoing dof) and/or up the ISO (after all the canons are good at hi-iso, right?) to get something like 1/250s (matching your focal length)

Hope that makes sense to you :)

@mobbes,

thanks for the great comments you've made :)
i have no idea what's the proper name for this plant but in chinese they used to call it (Luo Di Sheng Gen).. which fairly means, a leaf that drop on ground (soil) will grow roots on the edge of it.

here's some of your question's answer..

(IS lens ah?)
nop.. using tamron 70-300 1:2 macro lens. :)

Bet your cam wasn't on a tripod
it's on a tripod :D

you could've opened up the aperture (foregoing dof)
very true.. but if i was about to do that, the background wasn't smooth as a butter.. :)

(after all the canons are good at hi-iso, right?)
this statement is so damn right :D .. but i don't want noisy results :)

to get something like 1/250s (matching your focal length)
this is also true. my bad cause i didn't mention the weather conditions i was shooting on that day. i actually had an umbrella on top of my camera! :D.

Cheers~

Blueish color cast. Try adjust the Temperature setting (WB).

Yeah I don't really get what I'm supposed to be looking at here, the background bokeh is nice, but the subject cuts the frame somewhat in half leaving the eye confused as to where to focus.

The subject is neither close enough to admire the details nor far enough to admire the beauty of the whole creation.

I'd like to see some other compositions though as it's an interesting subject.
