Canon 40D Focusing Problems
By Dan on Oct 15, 2007 in Digital SLR Photography, Photo News, Reviews
Just a heads up for anyone looking to buy a Canon 40D. I purchased a 40D last week, took it home, slapped on a lens and couldn’t get it to focus. It didn’t matter if I used autofocus or did it manually - something wasn’t calibrated correctly (I think). Even though the image looked sharp through the lens, the photos themselves were uniformly blurry.
I called Canon for assistance and they told me to send the camera in for repairs, complete with a letter documenting the problem and printed samples that illustrated the focusing error. I just got an e-mail saying the 40D would be repaired and that I could expect to receive it in 5-7 business days.
A quick search of some other websites showed that a couple of other people are having this problem, too. If you’re in the market for a 40D, be sure to put it through its paces carefully and look for any potential problems. It’s a bit frustrating that Canon launches have been so buggy recently…

Actually I've heard about the similar problem from other 40D user. Couldn't know that this is true. :(

Does all Canon 40D has this problem? I am coming to KL this weekend to get the Canon 40D and I certainly don't want to come back to Malacca only to realize that it has auto focusing problem.
Apart from shooting on the spot and double checking it on the computer's LCD, is there any other way to determine whether the problem exists in the camera body? Or should I just buy it and then immediately head down to Canon Service Center for a cross checking?

Thanks for the headup, but I can't be doing this at the camera shop, right? LOL. Would be rather awkward too. ;) I think I will just drop by Canon Store right after I buy the 40D, just for a check up.
However, if the pictures are clear when I buy them at the shop, I will be testing with this when I bring it home.

No problem for me so far.
I would say it is the fastest auto-focus dSLR camera that I had owned.
Used 350D, and still uses my 5D. And the images are sharp, not as good as the 5D but sharp in focus and focuses fast (only the 1DMk3 is faster).
Here are some sample shots in combination with various lenses.

Do I like the 40D, yes for sports and travel, it's fast AF, 1.6x crop, tougher and weather sealed. For lesser demanding situations, the 5D is better in image quality. Your call.

So far so good for me...I used up to 18 gb of photo in my trip to London, roughly over 1400 shots, looks ok but I do notice is that it seems to have better bokeh and less sharp out from cam, compare with 400D...

Tried out this..........

see results at:

it could be seen that the 40D is slightly tadly front-focusing in the 2nd and 3rd pics.....
but as Bob Atkins says, still within acceptable limits...
