View Full Version : Why Did You Choose NIKON?

Hi fellow Nikon users! I saw jayhan's thread "Why Did You Choose CANON?" and I thought it's a good idea to open a Nikon thread.

And in this thread I'd like to echo/borrow jayhan's suggestions.

Tell us why did you choose a Nikon DSLR over other brands.
Keep it to technical advantages as well as the reasons behind your choice.
Do not flame other brands, and lets keep it clean. Promote without hate - its as simple as that.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I choose Nikon because...
1. In March 2005, I had a budget of Rm4k and it afforded me a D70 kit (and not a 20D kit)
2. Most of my friends were using Nikon
3. I tried my friend's Nikon D70 for a day and I liked it
4. I saw there was more Nikon gear available on FTZ at second hand prices
5. The Nikon CLS (Creative Lighting System)

why i bought my Nikon (or to be exact, my Nikon D50)?
1) it all started when someone dropped my Sony DSC-N1. that's when dSLR begins for me.
2) Nikon have more solid feel of the body.
3) My brother used to own D70s and currently D200. he poisoned me!
4) Plus due to the possibility of my brother selling his expensive lenses to me at a cheap price.

conclusion:
as a n00b in dSLR, i felt nikon have more solid feel of its body and it's lenses compared to other brands. plus, there are quite a lot of Nikon users which open up the possibilities of 2nd hand item.

At the time my budget allowed a choice between the D70s and the Canon 350D.

I was fairly evenly split until I went to the shop and felt both of the cameras, the 350D felt like a creaky plastic toy where as the D70s felt like a real solid camera worth the hefty RM3500 price tag.

Other factors were the kit lenses Canon's 18-55mm is blown away both performance wise and build quality wise (plastic mount vs metal) by the Nikkor 18-70mm which is a very well built and sharp lens for a kit lens.

Also the second hand market for Nikon seemed a lot more healthy than for Canon, and generally the accessory prices were cheaper slightly on Nikon side.

When I decided to buy a dslr, I could only afford D70 or 300D, In fact, these were the only 2 DSLRs that could be found in Kuching at that time.

When I compared the two DSLRs and kit lens, like ST, I chose D70. On top of that, it is easier to get used nikon lenses in Kuching.

(Actually, the salesgirl that sold me D70 is prettier than the one trying to sell me 300D....)

i had to choose between a 350d and a d70s. i preferred the grip and ergonomics of the d70s over the 350d. and my dad uses nikon and one day i`ll get all his stuff (f4,f5,135DC,80-200) hehe.

if i waited a few months later, when the k10d came out, i might be a pentax guy now.

i dunno whether i`ll be a nikonian for life, every system has its pros n cons

Simply answer, D200 i think is one of the best in midrange DSLR, n white site (L Lens) is much higher price than dark side.

I started playing with my Dad's F3 with the 50mm f/1.4 AI in the 80s and there's no turning back from there. The built quality, the feeling of the camera in hand, the pic quality, etc.

I choose NIKON b'cos:
No budget to buy other cam, this is the most affordable one
Inexpensive accessories, such as the cheapest flash SB400+55-200mm VR lens
Konfident with Nikon... past experience with the FE & FM10
Office also use NIKON, but soon change to Canon :(

Why I chose Nikon... well my wife surprised me with a Nikon D50 for my birthday last year. Was sleeping when wife placed the D50 box on my tummy. So Nikon it is...

Then found out many good things about Nikon (cheaper lenses, accessories, better build, bigger size). Held the 350D and found it waaaaayy too small, so 'thanked' wife for buying the 'correct' camera :)

Now if only she get the hint that for my coming birthday (May 1st) I want the D80...

When I wanted to upgrade from P&S to DSLR I was contemplating between Canon 400D and Nikon D50. Initially my heart is all for the 10MP self-cleaning CMOS sensor but as I held the lucious body of the D50, all that what matters. Ever since that moment I was known only as 'The Dark'

Do you know that Nikon F2 shutter range from "10 second" to 1/2000 second , that is using mechanical shutter , yes no batteries used, and from 1/125 to 1/2000 shutter speed can be selected in between stops, or stopless actually, any speed you wanted 1/150 or 1/166 or 1/1950.

My reasons:

1. My dad bought me a Coolpix camera.
2. Design looks great. Heard from somewhere that some of the Nikon DSLRs are designed by Giugiaro.
3. Good ergonomics (to my hand).
4. The amount of additional features the D200 had over the other brand I almost got, and a special arrangement for me to get before CNY last year
at a lower price than everywhere else.
5. Thought the Nikkor 18-200 VR was the only lens that I needed, then I would have saved a lot of money. (boy, was I wrong:D )
6. The 37ms shutter lag, HSC mode of the D2.
7. The great quality and history of Nikkor lenses.

I think there are a lot more reasons that I couldn't remember.

Nikonian
04-27-2007, 12:06 PM
1. Durability - Started with Nikomat. Later FE,F50,F4,F100,F3 and F5. None of these bodies gives any problem.
2. Better handling - Nice to hold, solid feeling, oozes quality and confidence.
3. Nikkor lenses - generally Nikon lenses are compact and provide excellent images with neutral colours as compared to the warmth/yellowish tint by Canon lenses.
4. Backward compatibility
5. Good resale value

For me, here the story: :)
1. My GM ask me to find any SLR camera to take picture of stolen Telecommunication cable since court only accept non-digital film for law purpose (in Sandakan). Later I buy one 2nd hand Canon EOS 500 for beginning, but got a problem with mirror always jam.;)
2. Then I buy EOS 50. And again, got a problem with shutter release, always jam and film cannot roll out.:P
3. Just last week, one gentlement posting want to sell his F75 at FTZ and I buy that camera from him. I take the picture using that F75. Suprisingly, my GM didn't believe me that I'm using SLR not digital camera since the picture very clear and sharp (using 70-240mm)! I show and demonstrate until he belive me.:D From that time, I feel in love with NIKON:D !
4. Other: From my research, it is easy to get used lens, accesories and the price also cheap!
5. Now I'm planning to migrate to D50 or D70s or D80, for beginning.:D

Bought mine coz of these simple facts:-

1. Lens variety and how even the new bodies can still use the old manual lenses whereas the new Canon bodies couldnt do the same with theirs
2. Canons are for pussies

I digress though, must admit the Canon AF is much faster than the Nikons - why do you think press photographers use Canon?

Why my D80?

1. D80 felt really good in my hands.
2. I think the 18-135 kit lens in the D80 is the best kit lens among the DSLRs today.
3. Lots of 2nd hand lens I can use.

And I didn't like the Canon 400D when I tried it.

i started using slr cameras with a used om10 + 50mm zuiko lens, 17 years ago. love it very much before it got stolen after a year. then bought an fm2 and never changed brand since then (except my compacts...hehehe). now using d200 and d70s. i stay with nikon because :

a. the bodies may be expensive but the accessories (lens, flashes etc) are much cheaper comparatively to other brands.
b. the sense of familiarity. my fingers just know where to go on any nikon body.
c. i love black
d. the old fm2 still works just fine.

Why Nikon? Hmmm
1. had the F404N since 1992. Never looked back
2. D70 allows me to use the same lense I already have.
3. Love the output especially the skin tone and the sharpness of the object/subject.
4. The ruggedness of body construct as well as the balance weight feel on the palm.
5. Had others before i.e. Minolta maxxum, Yashica Fx3, etc and they don't give me the qulity that i want.
6. When I was 16yrs old, was impressed with the Hassa medium format lense. Very deep brownish hue. When I asked the pro photog, he told me it was the indicator of quality of the lense. All Nikon lenses had it but not necessarily Canon.
7. Always trust a company who specialises in lenses and photography and not the other way around like Canon who goes into photography since consumerism is big there and they had an image/ copier dept that they could leverage on.
8. That's should be it. If not the Canonites will come out to get me. He he he :) :)

ND40

Why Nikon?

1. Because the lowest end DLSR (D40) from Nikon can fit my budget.
2. Canon don't have the texture on the body.
3. The lens cheaper, and don't have "L". So, i will be less day dreaming.
4. The looks and feel better on my hand. Feel that Nikon more solid if apple to apple. (Of course i'm not saying D40 Vs 1D rite?)
5. My Nikon friends can convinced me better as compared to Canon friends.
6. I can use my brother's old lenses.
7. Nikon - At The Heart of The Image

Was previously longing for 350D but when I tried 350D, the mini plastic doesn't justified with the cost (around 4k+ then). I had a canon G6 and 420 speedlite thus canon dslr would make more sense until I start pumping the calculator for lens. the canon kit lens 18-55mm is basically the cheapest 18mm you can get for canon. the next upgrade would be a 17-40L. it's out of my budget as L is also the first capital for LV.

With that, my heart fell for the dark side. The cost of owning a nikon dslr makes more sense for a hobbist. I got my d70s when the entire south east asia is out of stock. that was when nikon stop distributing d70s to give way for the brand new d50. with that, i head to hongkong and got my blackie there. don't mind the extra bucks i paid as it's one good camera. guy should use big camera and d70s fit in perfectly. :rasta:

Well... I was actually a Canon user till about 2005.

Started out with my dad's Canon AE-1, which wasn't the best camera for its time but was very nice to use. Got an EOS-1000 a little later in life for my birthday... Liked it a lot too, though it was very plasticky (didn't really notice as a kid, though)

Got a little sick of the EOS-1000 and went back to the AE-1 - buying myself another two 2nd hand models in mint condition (along with an assortment of FD lenses).

Then my dad got himself an EOS 300D just before I started working. Liked it to bits and didn't think cameras could get much better.

And then... one of my colleagues showed me the Nikon D70.

I rubbished it at first, commenting on the noisier high-ISO performance and the "more complicated controls".

And then I went out and tested one. And the rest was history.

I was awed by the D70's superiority in ergonomics - it was simply a far better designed camera than the 300D.

And after using it for a bit longer, the other advantages started to become clear - superior metering and flash exposure, more tweakable image settings (including an awesome auto tone curves), better acuity, much better kit lens and - best of all - the D70 was much, MUCH faster at everything. Oh, and the compressed RAW format didn't hurt either.

It's not that I think Canons are rubbish these days, though it seems like you have to pay quite a lot of money just to get a decent DSLR from them (at least a 30D). The 350D and 400D are too consumer-oriented - while they'll take great looking pictures, they are actually a step BACK from the 300D as far as usability was concerned.

I'm more of a touchy-feely person. And because of that, I'm in the Nikon camp.

All this could change, though. The 1D MarkIII is the best Canon DSLR I've used in recent times, simply because they COMPLETELY revamped the controls and made it more Nikon-like in use.

If the successors to the 30D and 400D are anywhere as innovative as the 1D Mark III, Nikon would have something to worry about again.

hi,
my stupid reason was simply because of the brand name. canon sounded more hong kong to me but nikon was more japan. so i chose nikon:D:D

i have bought
D50 - good but no wireless sync with SB600
D70s twice - good, got wireless but no enough control, and too big for my cute hands:D
D80 - too good a camera for me. love everything except the 'a little bit crazy' auto iso. really missed my D80 until now also...:(

and in the end
D40 - what a camera ! just need the 18-200VR to pair with only.

oh ya! the other reason that made me stick with nikon after i sold off my D80 was my SB600. super flash technology:)

and yes, because of all the poison put by my fellow friends in 'photomalaysia'.:P

that's all... TY

been using nikon since coolpix series... love da pix quality, can even beat my dad's fujifilm da one with da porche body(3mp vs 6mp)... ahahaha...:redface:

but unfortunately let go da camera to my ex... while looking around, my fren let my test his d70's... feel in love instantly... been using it since...

another reason is my group of frens is using nikon so easy to test those expensive lense... tested 17-55 f2.8 and 70-200 f2.8... marvellous...

Well I started with Olympus initially, joined a club which owns an Olympus c5050 (it's still one darn good camera, that). Before very long I bought my 1st camera the mju600 compact cam which at that time was sufficient for my usage.

Before long a friend brought along the Olympus E300. didnt really like the design (like a shoebox ) but the 2x crop factor + telephoto lens really did give a good reach.

i don't know why i choose Nikon because at the first thought of wanting a dslr, my mind only think of Nikon. never once Canon or any other brand cross my mind.

i took quite a long time to save some money to buy the Nikon D50. When the time came, i did try to consider canon 350D over D50. asked around, and a friend told me that canon body is cheaper but the accessories is expensive, so when thinking for long term, i think Nikon is a much better option for people with small budget like me. So i bought my Nikon D50!

when buying, i never tried Canon nor ask for the salesman to show me the stuff at all. reading all these posts here, now only i know that Canon's body (for the range that my budget could afford) feel plasticky..hehehhe (nasib baik) :D

Currently a Nikon D50 user. though an old model with limited functionalities. Its still a very good slr. Nikon Lens can be use throughout all its generation. From F to Digital lens can be used. All the mounts are standardize. Thats what I love. When going outing with fellow Nikon users. We can always interchange our lens as we can't afford each and every lens.

Nikon doesn't do price marketing gimmick. They release the item and sell it at a constant price. that price will remain about the same for a reasonable time. Bought my D50 at RM2500.00 and its about the same price today. RM2300 after the release of D40x.

Unlike my experience with other "brand". I bought a prosumer camera at RM2100 whereby it drops to RM1500, and then RM1200 and finally today you can get it at even RM900+. Imagine the pain where you asset has no value. like a stock market plunge.

and also because my dog likes Nikon too..

Nearly 30 years ago, after drooling over the gorgeous photos in National Geographic magazines and the camera ads, a teenage schoolboy with no money sent off letters (yes, snail mail, complete with stamps you need to lick) to Nikon, Canon, Olympus and Minolta in Japan, requesting for catalogues.
Nikon was the only one to reply, sending me a thick package with a full catalogue of cameras (EM, FM, FE, the then new F3) and complete line-up of Nikkor lenses. They also included a set of nice, high quality stickers, ranging from big (abt 20cm across) to tiny. I was overjoyed and highly appreciative.
Since then, I've owned Canons (IXUS, Powershot and EOS 300D), Yashica, Minolta rangefinder, Olympus compacts, but have always preferred Nikons (FG, FE, FE2, FA, Pronea, D70, now D300).

I started by using Minolta SLR when studying in U.S. The first SLR I bought was Minolta Maxxum (Here call Dynax) 600si and 5400HS flash. After come back to KL, I sold the 600si to my colleagues and bought myself a Dynax 9. The Dynax 9 was rated one of the best camera at that time.

The reason I decided to swtich to Nikon is
1) Minolta is no more in business.
2) It is almost impossible to sell Minolta stuff, either through website or sell to freind. I still keep my Dynax 9.
3) I used to consider Canon but their lens and flash is expensive.
4) Nikon stuff is easier to find in 2nd hand market.

- pro line build like tanks; I need it...should see my F5, that thing got banged around 'a bit'...but never let me down.

Got humidity in head twice, but electronics were back to normal after drying head in the sun.
Many falls and bangs and only viewfinder lock got stuck ever...and stayed stuck...for ever...:D
+++ for reliability.

In top Nikon's menus and buttons are great, easy access to most important features, no ducking around in deep hidden menus.
Ergonomics are great as well, thing just fits perfect into hand, despites being large and heavy.

Great lenses, great backward compatibility, good availability of second hand stuff.

I was using Nikon back from 80s started with 401 then 801 & FM2 and lots of lenses(from 14mm to 500mm) I then sold some of the sets to my friends in 90s and less active in it. In Early 2001 I bought a Olympus digital semipro camera and try to take some good photo out of it but still ok-lah the quality.. then I bought a Olymopus E500 twin lens that was even better photo quality... somehow I sold the set off and bought a nikon D50(used) ,.. well... Its seem even greater than the Olymopus e500 as from sharp focusing, colour quality to handling it far beyond e500. although I missed the viewing and close-up in e500's view which is 2.5'' and compare the D50 only 2'' and close-up funtion e500 is much easier. Anywhere what we need is finishing good, right?
D300 will be my next camera !!!

Compared both 350D with D70s, it was like 53%-350D vs 47%-D70s.
I loved everything about 350D (well, almost everything)... the size, the speedy AF, just 'ngam-ngam' amount of megapixels (8mp), good ISO....
I still wish I can own a 350D until today.

Until I went to kenrockwell.com. Better exposure, CLS, easier+faster controls... and I'm truly sold.
D70s' mediocre ISO & lack of large aperture wide prime lens sometimes makes me wonder if I spent my money in the system best suited to my shooting needs.
But looking at 4R prints of ISO1000 tells me it doesn't matter after all.

Why choose Nikon?

Me and Nikon...

1. Been brain washed from my dad since school days so I get my first SLR - F50.
2. My first SLR was been robbed later including SB-23 speedlight.
3. After my "dark" days when loosing my 1st SLR, I get my 2nd SLR - F80 and happily with it till now. She has been partialy retire and rest in my drybox end of 2007.
4. I get my 3rd Nikon - D40 + SB-400 (within budget) when I think is time for me switching to digital photography era. I've no more worry for the cost in film and processing it although i can't use my old lenses.
5. Now saving to get 18-200mm VR lens.
6. Although competitors like Canon, Olympus, Sony etc have the technology to outperform Nikon in some functionality and features, I'm still like the feel of Nikon body and with no turning back to other brands.
7. Once Nikon, my mind has set Nikon forever!!! (This call stubborn or old folk minds???)

Was all the while intended to get a Canon as my first DSLR. But, after trying both in the shop, the feeling in hand, the quality of kit lens (VR) and the price factor made me switch to the dark side.

After owning one and with some research and reading, Nikon is more focus on producing good IQ photos at ease while others are more fond of putting in new features and functions. :)

i chose Nikon coz the first ever SLR i used was a Nikon..so when i decided to get a DSLR no other brand came to mind :)

and if you notice, Nikon has the most friggin number of buttons on the camera body compared to competitors..

i like that, it means you have more dedicated buttons..i never need to search the in-camera menu for settings/other stuff when i'm shooting..

I'm started with Nikon L3 with 5mp. My friends are poisoned me on DSLR. Pictures with SLR is much sharper than compact camera. Accessories are not expensive like flash (SB600), Zoom Lens (55-200mm VR) -->Very sharp image and Entry DSLR (D40). NIKON is already have 90 years experience with making Cameras, lens, Flashs and others accessories.

one simply amazing thing a few of my friends and i can agree on is that:

when i use the D200 today, i get a very similar feel to the FM2..you can feel the camera working..it's not just 'Snap' and then a picture appears on your LCD.

i always believed a great image result is one thing, the process of taking it is better...every other system i've used was just way too 'electronic'

Budget enough to buy either one. It seems that the d80 cost more but does the extra price justify it's performance? I am not really a hard core photographer, but I don't want to get a d40 only to graduate later and needing to buy a better one. This is a one time investment on the camera body.

Then by all means get the D80. But you might wanna wait for the new D90, or consider putting a bit more budget for D300, or a second hand body of that. The fact is I believe Nikon nailed it right this time, and whatever nikon body you're going to get is not going to make you regret.

Hi.

I bought a used FM2 then years ago with a Vivitar 35-135mm and a Voctron Flash. It was because many of my friend that went to the university and joined their photo-club told me that FM2 was the best camera.

And at that time although the EOS88 and EOS888 was available under RM2k with all those AF thing, still felt the EOS was so plactic. And Canon EF mount cannot be use with the good old Canon manual camera. (The manual Vivitar can me mount and used on the F90x and F4 back then).

Then came along the MD-12, Sigma 28-200mm, 50mm Series-E, SB-800 in 2005, bla bla bla.

Then bought F50 from Engku, then the F80 (from KL guy) and turn to digital with a D70. Bought a D70s and a D100 along the way too.

Due to the familiarity and consistency of the system mainly the F-mount (but I don't know for how long Nikon will continue this), I chose to remain with Nikwon.

Most of my friends have turned to Kwanon with a nice 20D, 30D, 40D and so, with those long white thinggy (yeah, of course most of the actually only starts photography during digital era and starts with Kwanon system that is).

Nikon provides cheaper CLS / off-camera system with most middle entry Nikon DSLR have built in flash trigger with controllable channel and output. So most of us can save budget without buying external triggering devices (PW, Cactus, SU-800, you name it).

I think Nikkor lens is one of the best optical in town (18-70mm DX, 80-200mm f/2.8 AF-D, even the 50mm f/1.8 pastic made in china verson).

If using my working factor, I've should turn to Kwanon so that I can borrow those EOS-1D, 70-200mm L IS or even the 10-22mm EF-S for photo assignments.

But then again maybe I'll just stick to Nikwon since the intro of the D3, D300 and D700 showed that it will continue to provides the best capability to compete with Kwanon stuffs. Just that I've to buy it with my own pocket money.

Just a personal opinion. Thanks.

5)On my 18th birthday, he bought me a P&S Nikon camera.... Yeah!!!! 2 months later, brother damaged it......Argh.....!!!!! I promse myself to get a Nikon DSLR when I can earn myself....
6)I've been reading National Geography since I was a kid.... See many good pictures taken by Nikon camera... Love them...

D80 simply better than the D40/D60, new one only RM 2000 (I guess), still have RM 1k for 18-70 and 50mm 1.8

11-02-2008, 05:15 PM
I choose nikon because of my budget then was a mere RM2000. I was offered a 2nd hand D40x and I grabbed it. It was a good camera especially for a person who was new to DSLR then. Now, I have upgrade my body to D90.

malkor
11-02-2008, 05:46 PM
I choose Nikon due to the fact that the cameras are backward compatible when it comes to the old lenses. For example a lens made in the 80s would fit a brand new Nikon today or you could do it the other way around.

Also nikon has wide range of superb lenses up for grabs, not only that the ergonomics of the body is far better when compared to Canon's and Sony's. To top it up Nikon has a huge reputation among professional photographers throughout history, anyway I'm not condemning other brands as this is merely my opinion. But I just love my D80 :D

Nikon was my first SLR but not my first D-SLR...my first was an olympus. wanted to get a nikon but had to wait for nikon to come out with models with some features that I have already been accustomed to from using olympus like live view for example...

While I was using my olympus... I had an opportunity to use a nikkor 50mm f1.4 AF-D with my olympus body (with an adapter and manual focus only) I was amazed at the results...

So when the D90 came out... my wish came true live view nikon in a smaller body and now I can AF with the 50mm f1.4...

wanted to wait ofr a second hand D90 but itchyness was so high so I bought new body only and used it with the 50mm for quite a while...
