View Full Version : How to save petrol??

News of the impending petrol / diesel price hike is most likely to happen next year, which is less than a month away. Bad news for car users, which is applicable for most of us here. What can we do to save expenses on petrol har?
I have always been interested in the new Civic Hybrid (http://www.honda.net.my/models/civicHybrid.cfm), is it really on sale here in Malaysia? But then again, even if it is, I do not see any real encouragement from the Malaysian government (like reducing road tax) towards these clean energy cars.
How about converting my car (10 year old Iswara :( ) to a gas LPG engine? Will I get road tax reduction for that? Will it really save my money? The conversion alone cost a couple of thousand ringgits. How about those fuel additive or fuel cleaner in the market? Do they really work?
Any ideas guys?

Hi adyzul, have you really installed the hydrogenfuelsaver in your vehicle? Does it really work? How much is it? To be honest I am skeptical about these fuel additive that claims the whole universe, but are not really revolutionizing, you know what I mean? Sorry adyzul, but really no offense.

The hybrid Honda is selling like hot cakes in the USA and I'm doubtful if they'll market it here in the near future.
Your alternative would be LPG but you have to do a conversion through the contractors that are doing for the taxis, otherwise it's dangerous! And be aware that LPG pumps are not available nationwide.

I tot they are selling it here the Honda Civic 1.3 Hybrid @ RM162,800.00
The government should encourage and lower down the tax of such vehicle in M'sia. (very sad) :P  :(

save petrol by using smaller CC car?
i mean it doesn't make sense when u want big CC car and u want the fuel consumption to be as good as kancil, no?
maintaining your car well can reduce the fuel consumption from become worse.
if hybrid car ever reach Malaysia, that would be good. but then hybrid car works much better on highway (long distance). in city, it is just a bit better if i'm not mistaken.

Hybrid car already in Malaysia (Honda); However OTR price is very expensive. :( Very bad feeling still impose damned high tax on this environmental friendly car in Malaysia.

few tips
1) treat your accelator padle like egg press them extremly gentle and slowly... (but u will be driving like a turtle)
2) try less breaking as in if need to stop infront take your leg off the padle long before it reach the car infront of u
3) cruise your car at 2k to 2.5k RPM
4) take off all your super big spoiler and flag on your car
5) lower your car a bit...
6) try off load your car a bit as in take down all the heavy stuff in the car
7) pump half tank patrol
8) lose some weight (fulat esp u will be amaze how much power u will get by sliming down you and your car)
9) turn off the aircond when its cool but dont wind down the window too much
that's all i can think of haha

Dont drive like a maniac and speed, fuel consumption goes up when u drive faster and faster.
Driving a big cc car or a small cc car won't make much of a difference, you are still paying for fuel, these days RM70 for full tank and RM150 for even bigger cars are a norm. Multiply it by 4 you will get a hefty fuel tank spending per month. You might be able to afford a bigger car but you are still gonna pay 5-600 bucks on fuel a month or more. And when the rates go up expect to pay more.
Dont drive across the road to buy papers when you can walk across, dont be lazy exercise your fat butt and walk across the street.
Use a bicycle to go to very nearby places. It still safe lar no need to kiasu until u are so scared u going to get banged down.
Traffic jams are a killer for automatic cars these days, try to avoid it if possible if you know there is a jam and if you know it will take you 2 bloody hours to reach home using that same road why bother leaving at that time ?
You'll be shooting yourself in the foot by doing so.
And if you know by leaving later wont make much of a difference unless you are pressing for time, you're still gonna get stucked in jams rite ?
Figure out alternatives then, either leave later use a longer route but no jams or less cars in that place. Find shortcuts, be a bit more adventurous in looking for alternatives, dont just stick to the same route over and over again and later complain your consumption goes up and up.
Be creative above all think what goes into your pocket and out of your wallet.
In near future when everyone is more resourceful and look for more alternatives it would make our lives a little easier.
Above all prepare to make sacrifices at the end of the day its you who is paying for it.

this hydrogen fuel saver thing that adyzul has mentioned,
how come if this thing is a fuel saver, why does car manufacturers not install them in all cars, since it saves fuel, and increase power of the engine as well, after all, its just a small box the size of a car battery...

your right foot is the most important organ for fuel saving. there are no fuel additives that really works. they proved it in top gear and in my work place. I work with Shell and we haven't found any way to really reduce the amount of fuel usage everyday! if we found one, now that would be a tremendous achievement because we always set our score card in the R&D and Technologies department for fuel saving effort. really! we do have such thing! and if the fuel additives was one of it, for sure one of the oil and gas company will find it first. not some experimental lube oil company or something.
and to add some... making fuel is not a simple process just by inserting the crude oil in a jar and then mix with something to extract the petrol and diesel. Its far more complicated. just think logically and we wouldn't be cheated over and over again. :)
Peace Y'all!

It is good if you can finish your work at home... no need to go to the office for small2 job..
Use internet banking for money transfer... current internet banking like CIMBClick provide a safe money transferring system...
If you are in KL, using the LRT would save a lot more... no traffic jam, you can read newspaper while travel, no need to find and pay for car park, and save you a lot of time... :D

It is a great way to save money on transportation. Very very cheap and afordable. However the installation is expensive and the performance will drop. Couldn't speed like using petrol.

NGV + pertol setting in a car can save your monthly spending (on feul + NGV) up yo 75% compared to feul only... That's very good, provided that you are willing to spend from RM 2,000 to RM 7,000 for system installation (depending on your car model). The tank is heavy, which defeats mitmivec's point #7 (sorry... I don't meant u fulat), which means u need to increase you car rear height a bit... On top of that, are there many station around here.....? We from peninsula may have some stations around, but our bor and sis from Borneo may not enjoy this facilities.
Finally... I think it's best to plan your journey... Don't drive too fast (unless u like to get saman), and pleeeeease.. Don't drive to slow (Uless u like other driver to :soapbox::firing::smashfreak:.... It saves u a lot...
Drive safe everybody...

This is good for those heavy mileage.
For me, I think it may need about 6 - 12 months to break even the installation cost. :)
one way is you can send it for full weight reduction service (they have several packages)..they strip anything unecessary and those necessary may have lightweight replacements..
you'll be around a year's petrol money short, how much weight you want to shed depends on how much you're willing to pay ;) but in the long run it's actually worth it unless they suddenly stop hoarding oil and the price comes back down..(by then look on the bright side coz you're ready for drifting :D)
this is an alternative for those of you who don't want to convert to NGV because you just don't want to for no particular reason...
or you could just do things on a more minor approach:
1. Buy two-seaters or dump the two back seats!
- this means you're already lighter without the seats, and because you can't carry anymore back passengers you save even more :D
2. Dump the spare tyre or get it replaced by those tiny yellow ones.
3. Keep your boot clean at all times.
- i've seen cars with such a ridiculous amount of junk in their boot they could probably send their children to college just by selling all of it...
3. Turn off your air-cond and wind up the windows.
- if you haven't suffocated by the time you reach your destination you probably saved a couple o bucks..
p.s. on average you get:
- 2.3km per litre less if you drive with your air-cond ON. (2.0 sedan)
- 5% more fuel consumption if your windows are down.
- Optimal driving speed is 70-80kmh

About the recent Terengganu boo-boo...
Just curious for a 2nd opinion. A friend who has both a Perdana V6 and E200 said that the Merc is more fuel economical.
I don't have a Merc but my sister drives a V6 and from my observation (when I use the car occassionally), the fuel consumption is reasonable, comparing with and taking into consideration the engine capacity difference to my Vios.

I agree the Perdana is expensive to maintain and uses a lot of fuel, but why jump straight to a Merc?
Why not a Camry or an Accord?

nothing weird, just felt shame for how all of this turned out, and I'm glad it got out eventually. the reasons are not valid enough, n without reason rm3.4 million is spent for them to ride on. Penang MP made a wise choice to choose Camry as state car.
having said that, how is Myvi doin on fuel consumption?

Seeking opinion and advice.
Is it worth to spend RM200 on Denso Iridium on a Vios? If not, any other recommendation? I heard Bosch Super 4 is no good even though it is more expensive than normal plugs (but very much cheaper than Iridium).
Thanks.
