i strongly suggest that we dun compare it here
reason being that canon DSLR and nikon ones are all targetted at different segment and most of the model dont stack on the same level. thats my perception.
my suggestion is, stick a black colored tape over the brand on your DSLR and start shooting more :D

Well said.
I've seen excellent prize winning shots from entry level camera, such as this winner of the B&W category of the Digital Camera Magazine Photographer of the year award 2006 (http://poty2006.dcmag.co.uk/photos/togars_photographer_of_the_year_2006_portfolio/images/216342/original.aspx). taken with a canon 350D.
Also I've seen crap taken with the 1Dmk3.

aihh. the same thing happens to computer processor comparison and car comparison.
people always expect something to have a DIRECT competition. :( ridiculous.

i strongly agree with jayhan, we cant really compare coz they position their camera model at a different platform. No point to compare this way, the important is ----> shoot! If you have the best gear, but u cant shoot a nice picture, what is the point then?

for me i'd say the following if you really wanna compare em side by side
350D/400D vs d40 @ d40x
30D/40D vs d70/d70s/d80
5D ----> no competitor
no competitor <---- d200/d300
1D mark II/III vs d2/d2x and supposedly d3
1Ds mark III vs maybe a d3 due to its FF size, so then again d3 might fall between a 1D to 1Ds range.

i was lookin at the pricing element as the comparison....
350d & 400d price against d40 & d40x....
n it does seem like canon is pricing 5d close to 300d ...
i think new 5d is about 7k n 300d is about 6k++... i hope i got tiz rite... ;)
wat do yea think.. :?

You can't compare purely by price.
5D has crap ergonomics, bad features, plastic build quality and feels like a toy.
BUT it also has pretty much the best picture quality of any camera of it's era and it has a full frame sensor.
The D300 has a solid pro body, great features, is fast and responsive and has a cropped sensor.
They are for different segments and shouldn't be compared.
Now if Nikon comes out with a non-pro body FX sensor camera, like the D3 but cheaper and smaller - you can compare it to the 5D.
But I don't think they will, so 5D will stay in it's own segment.
And if they come out with a D3x (which is rumoured for Q1) next year, we'll have something to compare the Canon 1Ds MKIII to.

You may well be right!
Its like a guy who wins regularly playing golf on his computer, then claims he's a good golfer.

I'm a newbie but according to my sifu.. Photoshop skill forms an integral part for good photo as the camera by itself are not capable to fully bring out the actual beauty of a scene. And a trained eyes is required to play the key role for a successfully processed photo.
I only carry golf bags for my boss but how a computer golf game relate to a real golf game ? :?

That's correct but OT for this thread.
Any digital shooter must be well versed in Photoshop, if not how can you manage your colour workflow (profiles for camera, monitor and printer) plus get the most data out of your camera from RAW files, plus crop, straighten etc etc.
Photoshop is an INTEGRAL part of being a competent photographer.
You have to start with a good image, but you can manage the colour, contrast and so on back on the PC so when you are on the spot you can concentrate on important things like composition, exposure and dynamic range.

does that mean if the photographer uses photoshop his photo or image will be better? I could not comment much though as so far the only software I used for PP is Canon DPP and canon zoombrowser...really wonder how much will photoshop improves my photo.. I do know for sure on 1 thing, basic PP is needed to brings out the color of the D-SLR camera sensor, is like makeup. This means you need some ok features to start with....

Photoshop is a generic term for post-processing, it doesn't mean you have to use us PS. If you are processing from RAW with ANY software the fact is you are post processing your pictures.
Be it DPP or Zoombrowser or ACDSee or Nikon Capture or Lightroom or Aperture or Photoshop or Paintshop Pro.
The point is you aren't using jpegs straight from the cam and uploaded without touching the original file.

oh alamak my mistake, photoshop means post processing ka, I thought photoshop as in adobe photoshop... ok ok. Anyone uses adobe element and canon DPP before? How much different? As I wants to go to the next level of Post processing (PP), I am still wondering if adobe software or other PP software that is not free really is worth the additional $$$ to pay for. How much will it make my photo stands out as compare to canon DPP? I think elements is Rm380... maybe can transfer this thread to the other part of the forum, seems to divert a bit hahaha...

D40-350D
D40x-400D
D80-40D
above are all very similar matches, think it comes down to personal preference at the end.
5D is affordable full frame but lacking in build quality.
D300 has better body but no full frame.
Those two cameras don't compare well.
D3 is rather an improved 1D mIII, better as it has full frame. I don't like the 1,3 crop at all (screws up your FF wides, can't use 1,6wides, leaves you with very limited wide choice...).
D1s mIII has no competition really. Landscape kind of camera.
At the end of the day you can get good images with any of them. Any.
