i use my tamron sp90 with 580exII and a DIY diffuser.

you can use all sorts of combination. aside from 1:1 true macro lenses, other alternatives would be closeup filters (raynox dcr250, etc.) or reversed lens or extension tubes. as for flash, built-in flash also can if you dont have external flash.

come join us for our next macro outing :)

As for me, i use SP90 as well, with SB-800, so far havent try macro outing, only at my house garden. I found built in flash will create shadow when do 1 : 1 macro shooting. PM me if u all go macro outing, unfortunately this sat morning i cant make it.

Even with builtin flash, you can eliminate the shadow in the lower part of the frame. Just use a DIY diffuser, such as a styrofoam plate. My older shots (before Nov 24, 2008) were all lit with builtin flash. Just experient. It's almost free anyway with digital :)

But you can't set high f number though as the builtin flash is not powerful enough.

Tamron SP90 sometimes with Raynox DCR-250 attached, SB-800 with milk bottle diffuser (http://www.shutterasia.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3749&highlight=susu).

Never use tripod as I go for insects not flowers.
