In order to focus as fast as they claimed with the E3 u need to be equipped with the new SWM (supersonic wave motor) powered lenses 12-60 f2.8-4.0 ...otherwise the incredibly fast autofocus will not be working as fast as claimed with the older lenses.

Let's put it this way...

The Slowest being the kit lens..the new users would be equipped with this when the camera is purchased. Then they move to the high quality lens, one would expect a change in image quality and focusing speed. If there is no change, why should one change?

Then there are those who want every instant. Fast phased Sports shooters and similar. These are what the SWD lens are for. It's not to say the normal lenses and pro grade cannot be used, it just that these SWD are faster and as always with any company, improvements.

SWD is the current in trend. Canon have it, Nikon have them Sigma have them so why not Olympus. These new drives also more efficient..hence more shots per charge.

Now saying the speed of the SWD is only seen when coupled with the E-3 is not valid. Many older E system owners who have purchased the new 12-60 SWD have seen tremendous improvement in focusing seed.

Another improvement to us is the latest firmware update seem to improve the focusing speed across the whole range of E-system.

So cheers..shoot more and have fun.

i only own an entry level E500. it's not any slower than my brother's D50 or my boss' 400D when you use kit lens for all of them. even if it is, i can't tell it.

but E3 AF speed is something i have never experienced before. the only mid-range dslr i've tried was D200 and 30D and the AF is nothing compared to E3 even with AF-S/USM lens on it.

I own an E500 twin lens before I changes to D50 . Well Oylmpus ,I think is good to inventing new ideals. Like shutter dust proof now every new DSLR have it. Lives view started on E330 now all others fellowing, next in E3 has splash proof soon others will fellow too..... as for me I do missed my E500 but my D50 produced better quality pictures than E500. And D50 so far did not disapointed me, when I wanted to shot it shot unlike E500 sometimes its just simply locked-up.
