Dear all, does anyone here happen to know the difference between these 2 technology. OS vs IS ?
I am considering between:
Sigma 18-200mm 3.5-6.3 OS and Canon 28-135mm 3.5-5.6 IS
Both of them are selling at almost the same price. Around RM1650-1700 at Key Colour (Mid Valley)
Hope someone who knows can give some opinion here. TQ so much! :)

go for Canon. It has a longer history in IS R&D.

I would prefer the sigma. It is a newer lens compare to canon and offers u better range. 28-135mm is not wide enough. It terms of stabilizer, I think both lenses offer the same stabilizing.

Yeah I'd go for the Sigma too, the OS is good and 18mm is adequately wide on a crop sensor camera.

You can refer to the following link, from the MTF chart, it seem canon have a better quality built, but this is compare apple to orange (range is different). Just think for what you want, better coverage or what else? Of course, the best way of comparison is take the lens and shoot.

sigma 18-200mm cheapo lens... as in built quality and construction.

I'd rather bare extra cost for a Canon EF 28-135mm.

Sigma has a wider range at 18mm because it is a DC lens... for digital, which means you'll have to throw it away when you go on full frame. DC lens quality is often so so... I have a EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM and a EF 17-40mm f/4 L USM. Not sure about the EF-S 17-55mm. The 10-22mm built quality is average, but the 17-40mm is a huge difference in image quality so does built quality. So for the same price i'd use my 17-40mm if I need to go 28mm on my 20D. But since 20D is an APS-C so the 10mm would be useful to be 16mm for standard architectural photography.

The glass defines quality images not mega pixels.

You can refer to the following link, from the MTF chart, it seem canon have a better quality built, but this is compare apple to orange (range is different). Just think for what you want, better coverage or what else? Of course, the best way of comparison is take the lens and shoot.

Sigma 18-200 OS is the best selling third party Canon mount lens in this shop
YL Camera, 2007, as i heard it

+ve points - Versatility, lighweight, good OS, punchy colours, gives freedom for composition, sharp

-ve points - small max aperture, IQ may not be same as Canon lenses, Focusing a bit slower compared to USM.

Overall - Tested with 400D, amazed with results..Someone who has the 40D, 5D and a myriad of L lenses bought it to compensate for a light travel kit and gave it good comments as well....

It boils down to whether u want to carry 3 lenses with you or 1 or 2 lenses with you......

Not expecting Sigma's OS to work miracles but it works great so far.

They've not many lens with OS for the average consumer, unlike Canon that has it even on lenses like 55-250, 75-300 (i think) and 17-85. so on so forth.
