It's very rare (and expensive), usually you have to buy a softbox specifically for the hotshoe flash.

Or make something yourself.

simple solution.
wear a hard hat, mount a silver bounce umbrella on it,
fire your flashgun into it when u shoot mode.

if you're using hotshoe flash....stick to using umbrellas instead. Get the "shoot thru" brollies. much cheaper and mobile.

IMO if you use a hotshoe flash with a softbox, the output from the flash may not be powerful enough esp if you are using a bigger softbox size. Note, in a softbox, your light has to travel thru 2 layers of surface. unless you use those extremely small softbox dat r like 6"X4" dat can fit directly on to ur flashgun.

cheers

*ahem*

IMHO, 'softbox' on hotshoe mouted flash will still give u the flat 'on camera flash' look. Albeit softer light.

The flash by itself is a 'small light source'. A softbox, will makes the light source bigger.

Big light source, soft shadows, small light source, hard shadows.

But as the distance between subject matter and your lightsource increases, the light will still becomes harsh, relatively speaking that is.
