Does anyone knows if there is a custom function or setting on the D80 to set the AF-L/AE-L button to initiate AF while at the same time, maintain the half-press on the shutter release button? :?

Hi Alan,
You could set the mode under the CUSTOM SETTING MENU, look for AE-L / AF-L. There are a few setting you can try out. Page 94 on the Nikon D80 Guide has a better description on the AE-L/AF-L mode to use. There is also a AE lock function on the CUSTOM SETTING MENU, which lock or unlock the exposure when the shutter-release button is pressed halfway.:camera:

You want seperate function for AF-L/AE-L to initiate and lock focus and shutter release button to lock exposure?

Refer to menu and manual as described by Kickers and select AF-ON.

Thanks Jason. If I enable the custom function to get the AF-L/AE-L lock button to start and lock focus, the shutter release will not start autofocus. What I want to do is have both the AF-L/AE-L and the shutter release buttons to initiate and lock focus.

I have now reckoned that this would not serve the purpose - the camera will try to re-focus when subsequently I press the shutter release, defeating the very purpose of AF-ON custom function.

That's the function of the AF-ON button. To seperate focus from shutter release. Just like the good old days of manual SLRs.

What I want to do is have both the AF-L/AE-L and the shutter release buttons to initiate and lock focus.

Hmmm...

Precisely. :D

it's a very good tool if you love playing with metering. (non moving object, best when shooting landscape, to grab the best exposure). Custom set it on press to lock the exposure that you wanted. Then, compose your pic again and shoot. A well-exposed picture will come out.
First of all you will have to study about the mid tone and stuff to know where to lock. Is hard, lots of trial and error needed to master it. :)

AF-L means locking the focus so how can u refocus? unless u want that afl/ael button to just lock the metering than focus with half press button than choose that button just for tht. tht is how i understand it.

I wanted to use the AF-L/AE-L button to start and lock focus, not just to lock focus. It is like re-assigning the half-press function of the shutter release to that button. The Custom Function will enable this but will disable the half-press of the shutter release. What I wanted to do was to have both the AF-L/AE-L button and shutter release to have the half-press to start AF.

Curiously, I tried this on a D2H and both the buttons can function at the same time. But this is not the same with the D80.
