pentax k100d:
pros -simply affordable, color curve is also cun, got IS also, grip is better than 400D
cons - had to use AA batt @ 2500mAH NiMH, lens range kena pandai cari
canon 400D:
pros -whatyoucansayaboutcanon?, its all there already.
cons -small grip(unless you like it- i hate 'em), no dedicated status LCD panel -uses monitor screen -drain batt quickly.
just my opinionlah. the rest is up to you

Why? Try to evaluate the whole system, including lens, flash, accessories. Another reason is because i'm owning one :D
For pentax you need to know where to find lenses, etc...

I'm not recommending or suggesting. I'm just helping you to understand the best available feature for your hobby (like me and other SA's :D). You might like the low-$$$-out-of-yer-pocket so, the K100DSuper is the best for you. But on the otherhand, you might like Canon with a bit of extra $$$'s. :rasta: :partyon: . just borrow SA's member cam and test out...you'll find your likings. :run_away:
btw, I'm nikonian.

but i thnk pentax k100d way better than 400d hehe summore the stylish design :tongue_roll:
Nikon user here also. Hope you don't mind.
You ain't purchase the camera. You are about to purchase a system. Thats my advise. Research on both system, evaluate them and see which suit you the most. The most important, go out to the shop, test them!!

Okay Bro..
Here my story..
I'm ex Canon user, 400D but as some reply said, you not buying a camera, you buying a system. FYI, I've research all popular camera system, I've my "crush" with Nikon, Olympus, and finally i've stumble upon this brand... Pentax
So why I will choose Pentax k100D
Cheap. it's just not the body is considerably cheaper, the "biasa pakai"
DA* lens pun very cheap. Hence the system is cheap!!
Let say you want to have
k100Ds (RM 2000) + 16-50mm f2.8 = RM 4750
400D body (RM 2300) + 17-55 f2.8IS (3500) = RM 5800
and you get 1 or two stops more by adding RM 1000 more... which is not
justifiable for me..
But, for me the consideration is inbody stabilizer and cheap pro range lens.

...then go buy 'em and feed us with your new toy :run_away::rasta: hehehee
I got K10D, what can I say? it's the best-bang-for-bucks DSLR so far...
I like K100D super's ISO1600 image, very usable, K10D can't beat it even with ISO800!
The fun thing with Pentax system, it is fully compartible with all new & old Pentax mount lenses (some even older than me), the SR can be adjusted manually to suit any old lens focal lenght too. It's the most backward compartivity system ever.
Here is the most recommended Pentax K-Mount page:
http://kmp.bdimitrov.de/index.html
Frankly, if you need SR/IS lots of time, you might as well get the Canon/Nikon IS/VR lens. Not saying the SR built-in dlsr body no good, just that when shooting safari on jeep, the K100D super viewfinder won't get SR function, you will hardly get an animal shot with 300mm lens. That's why Canon/Nikon lens built-in IS/VR, the viewfinder get stabilize too.
For me, SR is a very useful & cheap way to make all your lens stabilize, it's a bonus, but not = IS/VR.

also the pentax batt grip is very nice to hold. it also has space to keep your memory card and remote control in it. keke. nice to hold..looks nice. very rich pic colour. hehe. :tongue_roll:

i second that..got a friend whos using pentax k100d with XR RICOH lens..the dynamic range is fabulous..maybe it suit with the manual lens..i think pentax is not for newbuy cause the default image taken is not as punchy & vivid as a canon. but u got in camera anti-shake & meters with focus confirmation on all 50 years worth of cheap and legendary m42 and pentak-k mount lenses!

using 4 AA batts is not cons to me but it give an advantage. K100d is entry level DSLR an almost who want to buy entry level DSLR not yet ready to spend on an expensive acessories...included RM 100+ lithium batt..also my opinion..no offense

As an previous canon 400D user
I will choose K100D super.
WHy
Image stabilizer - will make all lens become IS
ISO 3200 - still reasonable
I dont think Pentax lens is hard to find. Maybe you just have to wait
Regarding to whole system, I believe Pentax is the cheapest, their DA* (star) lens is waay cheaper than Canon "L" series and SOny "G" series.

If I am to start from zero as a hobbyist, I will go Pentax way. It worth every punch for the buck.
AA batteries? You can just buy them at any convinient store, worldwide.

Using a prosumer fueled by rechargable nimh AA batteries. D only downside is their shorter juice span compared to manufacturer specific batteries. But as mentioned earlier, AAs are easily available just in case ur batteries runs short but ur need for shots is still there.
Also intending to upgrade within a a year, and also weighing between D80, used 30D or K10D. Lens wise, d Pentax has a slight disadvantage, but u cant deny d value of their systems.
Go for Canon if u'd b doin plenty of low light shooting n lens availability.
Pentax for its value n egronomics.
