Hi all,

I'm going to shoot an outdoor assignment in Beijing where the temperature is about -7'c now... What effects will the cold weather have on my camera(D80) and lenses? Are there precautions I can take? :?

WAHHHHH!!!!!!! CONGRATS!

Anyway i just know that ur battery might sleep in such a cold weather...have to warm it with your hands or put it in your jacket pocket inside ur jacket so that your body heat will warm it up...also can put it under your arms......

While lenses can get fogged up, don't let them be subjected to immediate change of temperature. Prepare some bags with the sliding zip thing, like those sandwich bags....

It should be ok, just the battery life will be considerably shorter.

And make sure you don't turn it on until it's adjusted to sensor - especially from cold to warm because you'll get condensation.

So when you change temperature make sure you leave it a while before turning it on.

Not sure if it is peculiar to my camera but I recently shot in -2 deg temp. and I had some difficulty with the autofocus and there was no beeping sound when it was finally in focus. So I had to do a lot of manual focussing.
The other problem was lens fogging everytime I pull the camera out of the bag..
Have fun in Beijing:D

Happened to me when I took my gear out of my air-conditioned room and shot it outside in the hot sun and was wondering why were all my lenses blur! ;)

On another note, I tried searching for operating temperatures for the D80 and mostly found that it would operate at 0 degrees celcius which was rather weird. Previously when I was an R&D engineer for video camcorders, I worked on the CCD and the digital imaging side of the camcorder and most of the time we did a lot of testing under -10 degrees celcius. Most electronic items (Digital signal processors, CCDs, capacitors, resistors, etc..etc..) have operating temps from -10 degrees celcius and onwards.

hehe i'm now in Beijing and my D80 working well under -5 degree celcius at outdoor. But I put it back into my winter jacket and use my body to heat it every 15 minutes. :D a bit worry mah.. hehe

yes i found that the battery will sleep sometime (the top lcd show the fully charge battery only left 1 bar) .so need to keep it warm.

I was in Beijing last 3 weeks with the temp around -5 degree. My 350D + Sigma lens never got any condensation/fogging when going in and out of buildings even without any protection.

The heater inside the buildings in Beijing was not warm enough to cause the fogging. Heck, i experienced lens fogging when going out of the snow house at Mines Wonderland
