Would like a see a small section of film corner such as film camera, special film and processor shops etc ...
What do you think Admin ?

Not sure how many people in SA still use film regularly. I bought a film SLR, after i bought my dslr, but seldom use it. If a section was started, not sure what kind of response would there be?
I would say that our main focus is digital photography as that is what we are mostly using but maybe if other people who use film could indicate if they would like a section on film and how often they shoot film, it could be considered.

Photography forum like this shouldn't confine itself to digital format only. I am sure there are quite a number of members here still using their analog camera. I am one. I won't be surprised to see lots of members support this suggestion.

it's not so much as to confine ouselves to digital format, but rather if there is a need. we'd rather not start a new section if it would be seldom used or visited. That is why i asked for those interested to show some respone.
I still use film, abeit much less. one main reason 8 dun shoot film currently is tht i got 1 unfinshed roll of velvia inthe cam that i have no idea how to finish. I also have a canonet range finder, an underwater film pns, and two film pns. But due to the digital era, analogue has really become stuff of enthusiast.
so we rather get a response from people before we start a new section. let us know :D
djspinnet
01-11-2008, 10:28 PM
personally, i use a film camera too, have a film pns and film slr myself which i still use. but i don't really care whether this forum has a film section or not as i also frequent another forum where there's an active film community whom some of them film enthusiasts, i know personally so it's much easier that way -- to either go back to that forum, or contact the folks outside of the forum.
i've observed SA to be a almost fully digital forum, and have no problems with it either. :)

Having an additional corner would be great however should remind ourselves also
1) Need to update it once in a while rather than syiok for a while then later it quiets down
2) Perhaps we could do a short poll on how many members here still shoot film to gauge the interest level.
The replies in this thread also would be a good indicator on how much interest would be there on film.
So if there are people still shooting film, please give your round of support here.

a few months back, a section called Car Lovers (http://www.shutterasia.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=49) was opened based on the request by our fellow members. and up till today, we have somewhere around 30 threads. this is not actually a good figure on paper. but it does bring some good information and sharing.
i myself have a lot of interests on film photography as i have no experience using it. i do think having a dedicated film section is a good thing. but it is important to keep it as active as possible. if there are enough people to make it happen, i would say, let's do it.
and sharing photo is also as important as sharing knowledge on film. educating is important so that younger photography generation will learn to appreciate this forgotten medium. there are a lot of things about film that need to be shared. if we limit it to only sharing photos, the photos can be placed at other sections along with the digital ones. sharing knowledge would make a lot of difference.
so like i've said earlier, if there are enough people to make it active, i would say, let's go analog!!! :D

a good way to start is to create exposure and education for those who have
1) Never touched a film camera in their lives....i am referring especially to current digital newbies who are new in photography. Digital fast tracks your learning curves, but film teaches you the slower steps and how it actually all began.
No PS - CS3, no fine tune etc...what u shoot is what u get
2) Current digital folks who switched from film to digital....yup digital era fast tracks your results and cuts down tremendously on expenses. Developing films now ain't cheap but who says having a hobby isn't cheap.
(Need to constantly remind these particular people here that hehe...dont forget digital can never replace film's quality :D)
one good way to start is for those who have a pretty decent film scanner tolong scan some of my prints and negatives can ar...so i can post it up here..:D
aye! aye!

I was thinking la...
Cos usually I borrow my friend's Coolscan IV ED, which he and a few friends pool money together and take turns to own. Maybe can do the same thing also (but I got no spare cash to share even ler... at this moment)

Yakah?
Film SLR also got 2 types one wor... the fully manual one and the noob proof ones :D The noob proof ones is like DSLR minus the LCD preview only but you can be pretty much assured your photos will turn out fine when you develop it :P

I've used the old Yashica FX2000 (I think) manual camera before. A lot of trial and error and lots of filem used. Unlike digital nowadays.

The reason I'm in with SLR mainly because film having more feel about color and deeper thought on the exposure etc ... That is why film still exist till now and occasionally we do find some film converts in the photography world.

Yah don't have to be SLR, could be RF or TLR.
Two lenses > 1 IMHO :P
Or even Lomo.
Anyway seems like there's quite a following, convince me a little more and I'll open the section.
I have been spoilt by digital for the last 9 months or so and have neglected my film gear to point that my stocks of film in the fridge is expired/expiring. Took out 3 rolls last month and the feel of using film again was absolute bliss. However, there is still a lot of film in the fridge and I don't think I could finish it soon. Any one for cheap film???

You will never get similar colours and exposures consistency when printing negative at different shops you sent to. This depend on the operator skills and their experiences in adjusting.

always go back to the one you like best/most comfy with results/like the service and no one else. eventually they'll recognize you as a regular and will give you good rates/special treatment/listen to your special instructions etc. my fav shops is way out of the way but i still go there anyway (in penang). in KL, haven't found a good shop yet that i like.

0_Buy, carrying another set of camera would be a weight burden to me. As usual, I will meter the grass, road surface etc which is 18% grey to get accurate exposure. Again, I would prefer to use in camera metering because you will have better understand how your camera metering works. Even though same model of camera, their metered exposure will differ a little. Cheers

Hi bokehGalore,
Don't torture your mind. She is definitely hungry for some action. Now is the best time to go out and shoot with chinese new year festive around the corner. Plenty of action in the city of KL. Shopping complexes, temples etc are busy and well decorated with plenty of subject and action, the reasons to shoot with your analog camera.
Cheers, man.

Came back from shooting the roll of Sensia. Can't wait to see the result. 17mm perspective is rare to me, at least thru the viewfinder. Now let's see how it looks like on slides.
I think I will continue to shoot occassionally until I can afford a full frame DSLR.

Can someone start out with a sticky about useful resources for film shooters divided into categories.
Perhaps about gear, film stock and development.
And a list of resources in KL for buying and developing/processing pics (places that can x-process, develop B&W properly, enlarge MF negs etc).

or these people have gone to fully digital now?

been extremely busy :(
hardly have time to post, 3 rolls of film still undeveloped and just acquired a few rolls of Tmax, Deltas and Neopans which since the day of acquisition, has been sitting idly in my fridge waiting for my schedule to free up :(
As for film, for B&W films, tri-x, hp5, neopan, get from central market the shop in front of entrance. or go to pertama kompleks.
For consumer colour, like Fuji Superia or Kodak Centuria etc, anywhere also got laaa....
For pro colour like Velvia or Reala, a bit harder to find. I still dunno where to find in KL.
Shashinki also carries some pro films. But can't remember what's in there. Haven't visited the site in ages.

Create a subject then!
:D
Example. Turn off all the lights in your home, and shine a torchlight against something and shoot the shadow shapes that appear. Or if you got those fancy lamps at home, turn off all lights at night except that one, and shoot the shadow patterns. Or shoot a lamp stand. Or do "CLS"/strobist/chiaroscuro/<whatever fancy name you wanna insert> using one or multiple torchlights.
I have daaaaaammmnnn loads of photos shot at night using only a torchlight shined on household objects or fancy lights. They're damn fun :D

So take a digicam/dslr, twiddle till you nail the exposure right, then take note of the settings, copy over to your FM2 and shoot lor!
You did say once you wanted to learn manual exposure right? :D :D :D
P/S that was how I learnt :P
PP/S make sure also your DSLR's ISO and film ISO match up :P

Err.... okay, thanks... though I didn't exactly ask the question where to get films as I already have my regular supplier/shop that I go to...
