Hi guys ,
I m planning to get this Tamron 17-50mm from my local store. As we all know that there might be some QC issues with this lens. So as stated , what must I check or how do i check this lens to make sure everything is in working order ??
Thanks .

Just check it under the light to make sure there's no fungus and dust inside the lens element (there shouldn't be any). Then, attach it on body zoom it all the way to 50mm and shoot. Check the image and make sure what u have focused is sharp. Finally, pay and go home happily. :)

When checking, best that you have your laptop with you. Shoot, transfer file, and view it on a larger screen. Sometimes, some problems are hard to detect while viewing on a small LCD screen.
Some known issues with it is that at the wide side (17mm) the image is too soft.

You can zoom 100% on the LCD on the camera to check for sharpness.
If you want to be really anal you need a tripod and a focus chart.

Lack of sharpness will be most obvious wide open, so test at f/2.8 - it'll be relatively soft all over.
Try at f/4 and it should be sharp.
At f/5.6 it should be razor.

ok .. understood. Thanks . :)
not forgetting -> when the lens is attached to the body for checking/inspection,
make sure u test the f2.8 at the widest end and the 50mm end..
this is to ensure that the aperture can open to f2.8 at all range.

Also check the focus points, for example focus at the various focus points your camera has and check if the section where you are focusing is sharp when wide open (f/2.8 or f/3.2)
