I am curious about the Field performance of this lens and anyone has bought it in Malaysia and the price? As the price I saw from the Sigma price post in here is at Rm3299 which its quite a different from what I saw in bangkok hence got me interested, hahaha and of course the weight compare with a 70-200mm F2.8..

Ya ya, I'm curious to know too.
I wonder if any SA members own that lens. RM3000+ is a bit expensive, I initially thought it cost around RM2500. Used Nikon AFD 80-200 F2.8 is also about that price, or cheaper sometimes.

soohk, mitmivec mentioned Paul from Lensa. Have a look at his pictures (http://www.lensamalaysia.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7054) using this particular lens on his 30D.

To quote his comments: a poor man's alternative to the EF 70-200 2.8L :D

Thank you guys, looks quite attractive, will check out with paul.. as even within Bangkok the price fluctuates around Rm250 from the 1st shop I saw to the 2nd, and both stores are at major departmental store, wondering about bangkok street price. Maybe for those who is on the look out for this lens and going to bangkok soon, fyi the highest price I saw is priced 20% less than from malaysia

Forgive my ignorance, is Bangkok a good place to shop for Photo-equipments too? so far I only think of Malaysia & Singapore lah..

yeah karheng, I saw it in central world & paragon.

@ fantt01, so far hoya pro 1 digital filter is a lot cheaper. Canon Lens, depends on model. Canon Body, also depends on model. Example when canon 40D was launched its priced at 43,500 baht with canon Es-1 printer thrown in. This offer no longer valid... :). Sigma lens, if compare with the price shown here is quite cheap...Last time I used to buy Hoya filter for friends just to earn some $$$... I am going next week also

yah I have one. complements my 17-50 very well. with two 2.8's in the bag, it's a seamless transition from 17-150.

Price-wise, I thought it's about 2.5k new though it could've gone up 'cos Sigma came out with a "mk2" version a month or two back. Don't know what they upgraded :)

If you can do with 50mm less, it'll save you loads vs the 70-200 f2.8 OS or VR etc. Moreover, it's more handy & less conspicuous ... chances are you'll use it more often.

Quality wise, I'm happy with it lar ... but you'll have to ask the pros opinion also. Fast to focus & silent. Sharp & nice blur also ... can get nice "separation" portraits if you know how to work with it.

only little bug to me is the rear cap has to be aligned correctly to lock ... so slows down lens change a bit lar

hope it helps

L lense colour are still the best... if u want to compare it with 70-200 f2.8L i have sigma 70-200 f2.8 before... auto focusing lose by a street, colour from sigma are warmer compare to L lense accuratecy and at F2.8 L lense are sharper than the sigma too... all this are come from what i feel might not apply to other :D just my 2 sen

just to add on.. the sigma also got advantages also .. light weight ... but for this i still choose the 70-200F4 but just me lah ;p add more to confuse u eheh

I own a 70-200 2.8L IS now and used to have sigma 70-200 2.8 APO EX DG bought brand new from YL when I was with Konica Minolta system.

IQ wise I have to say the siggy is outstanding only a bit (I say a bit here) soft at f2.8. Focussing speed also only a tiny bit slow.... Built like a tank.... weight as heavy as the canon counterpart....

The L is different that I don't have to worry what aperture I use... I know it is going to be sharp anyway.....

As for prices in Bangkok check out Fotofile in ghround floor of Mabukron Shopping Center ('National Stadium' sky train station near Siam Square). They usually have decent prices for bangkok level:

Bring passport for 7% VAT refund for tourists.

For Nikon equipment go directly to Niks Thailand, importer of Nikon for Thailand. Their shop is on Silom road.
Webpage is manily in Thai however...

price in Bangkok is really good then. I just checked Amazon.com, about US$762.48 or RM2600.

But why not the Sigma 70-200mm? It's actually cheaper , US$700. Though it's bigger and heavier, I believe the extra 50mm would comes in handy when shooting action and sports
