Looks like good news for Nikon D40/x owners as Tamron has refreshed their ever popular 17-50mm lens with a built-in motor.

Ah great news, even for other Nikon body owners as the only problem with this lens is the slower focus than the AFS equivalent, I'm not sure what technology Tamron uses for AF though and if it's equivalent to Sigma's HSM or Canon's USM.

I suspect the AF motor is similar to the Canon mount one.
I'm just wondering, will AF accuracy increase? Or is the AF motor going to create more back/front focusing issues?

Well from what I understand, having the motor in body would give far more accurate focusing as the lens would be focusing using it's internal mechanism, not using the camera focusing motor which might not be quite aligned with the lens.
I'm not entirely sure tho.

So the rest of the spec remains and the only change is that it has an in-built motor? Is that correct?

Has anyone have experience ordering this lens from Shashinki ?

Shashinki owner KKK have personally tested the new lens and said the AF focus is slower than the old version but still good buy for D40/X & D60 owner as have built in motor

ya, I heard of that before also, but is it confirmed slower than those without built-in AF motor?
any other review other than Shashinki's one?
price for the A16N II is still RM 1,350 at ShaShinKi.com..
AF is slightly quieter than the old one (on D200 body)
AF is approx 1/2 speed of the old one (on D200 body)
bottom line, get the old one...unless you're on D40/x or D60...everything else is the same..it still has the same back/front focus problems if you get a bad copy..and it still works fantastic (near AF-S 17-55mm optical quality) if you get a good copy..which means they haven't really up their QC

I guess QC is still a problem. I've been reading so many different experiences and responses on this model of lens.

i have the A16N II. Been getting f-- at times. Overall,i'd rate it a wonderful piece to have and am satisfied with the performance .Guess the cons are acceptable for lens at this price.

i guess those who write good reviews got a good copy, those who write bad reviews got a bad copy
though focus errors are a quite common for all 3rd party lenses...(even sigma/tokina/cosina etc)...so get your copy focus tested at the shop before buying ;)
after all you ARE paying only a fraction of the Nikkor variant..i'd rather pay thousands less and spend a little time doing some focus tests..the quality is superb with a good copy

the newer version is probably dedicated only to D40/x/60..
the older version is still better/faster and its no longer in production (logically)..

yes, true! so for those who already own a body with built-in AF motor, I think buy the old version is better...

I have the motor version using on D80. How to get rid of that focus hang F-- problem? I hate it when it happens during critical moments.
Other than this the lens is pin sharp and wonderful. Focusing is quite speedy though some say the motorless version is faster maybe they use on high end body.

How to know whether a set is grey or not?
Malaysia warranty cover how many years?
See the warranty card color like nikon dslr?

very simple, if grey set means grey colour... :P
just kidding... where would you buy from? if from the camera shops normally will provide you the valid international warranty card with company stamp and a proof of official receipt of that shop, thru my experience, grey set won't come with warranty card or without International warranty written on the card. Please check with the shop and ask them to clarify, you have the right to ask.

Haha got my lens di. It's 'parralel import' not grey...:? It's made in japan and all manuals/warranty card is in Japanese so I guess it's as grey as it can get
Anyway, seems like a great lens, focusing is fast and sharp. But, Nikon D90 users beware, though not a major issue, still, it bugs me...
The Tamron 17-50 with built in motor wont focus properly in Liveview mode!! Haha, yeah i know we seldom use live view but still its a bug.
Was fiddling with it with my friends and found out this problem. Some people are also discussing it in the dpreview forum: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1034&message=29286368
So, if you happen to own the D90 and plan to buy this lens, here's the heads up. :(

Yes. At 24mm and above, Focusing ring turn to nearest end and keep wondering there. Not only this lens, I heard few other lenses having issue of this with D90 Live View. Anyone kind to share?

I think not Tamron problem. Maybe other lens (unless Nikkor) may have this live view focusing problem too. At the end, third party lens makers may give announcement: Our certain certain lenses may have compatibility issue with D90 live view. Problem solve

Haha yeah nikkor lens sure no prob lar.
Thing is the tammy 17-50 focuses just fine in Nikon D300 bodies, but not in D90 bodies. So its evident its a firmware issue. They have the power to fix it but they shrug it off just like that, either that, or it's the incompetent guy who knows nothing about camera, firmwares, etc. Bet he dint even click on the link I provided, haha. Blind accusations!! :run_away:

1. Hand help or tripod option in D300 LV. You are right it must be firmware that Nikon don't want to give to D90.
2. Bad news for 17-50 A16 DiII Tamron user but good news for any non-motor lenses will have no LV issues. No wonder old 17-50 so laku now.
3. My nikkor 50mm 1.8 works excellently in LV. Got one lens can do the work some more face detect ok lah.

yeah, I have the version w/o motor. So far no problems with AF in liveview.
I didn't manage to find no motor version in shops in KL/PJ. If you happen to go to Bangkok, go to Niks Thailand at Silom. I got mine from there about 1 month ago. 13,000 Baht only, and can get 7% VAT refund some more. But made in China la, which I think is not a problem.
