Another vapourware from Sigma? Haha
I hope not...I hope it comes out and it kicks the Fuji F31d's ass! As that's the only compact so far that can produce decent pictures.
The only thing that makes me wonder is the lack of zoom and the fact the lens is only f/4.
Perhaps they cant fit a more flexible lens in a compact body and still give coverage to a larger sensor.

Looks very interesting to me for a compact.
Rather than cramming in zoom and whatever I would prefer one good lens and at 28mm they choose an interesting focal length. Good to do your 'dinner shots' when going out with friends, good to do some detail stuff at 0.3m, some scenery, some architecture.
Shutter and Aperture Priority settings, very good.
Never mind f4, most compacts don't do better than that anyway...if zoomed in a bit.
Personally would have prefered not to get 14MP out of the sensor but rather around 8-10MP and higher ISO performance. Going to 800ISO only it somehow suggests that after it will be quite good to 400 only...
But if it can get results up to 400ISO comparable to a DX size dSLR at 800ISO it would be good enough for me.
Will see, if that thing lives up to what they promote that might be the P&S for me.
Better one lens and good image quality than zoom and all the music and then...cr@p...
I guess the size is with non retractable lens, 2inch is quite thick...not really slim-slim...
Looking forward to it, but price tag might be quite high...
Know anything else in a similar category? Big sensor with dSLR quality in small package?
Leica D-LUX 3 comes into my mind, with zoom but small sensor. Supposed to be good only up to ISO200 and very expensive for what it is...

The only other camera I know similar to this is the Sony R1 which gives excellent results with a dSLR size sensor.
But it's rather large.

Bigger than a D40 or about same if D40 has lens attached...
Not really.
Looks ugly as hell too...

beta test pics are out at dpreview and it looks promising. the only setback is that the price would be around rm3000... it might just be the ultimate compact ever. there wasn't a iso800 shot but the iso400 shot looked very usable and with a 28mm, i'm keeping a tab on this

Yah skin tone and colours are very accurate and vivid, sharpness and detail looks excellent on the full size files.

Found the shots, the look quite OK, but one has to wait.
There is an IS0800 shot actually, those tiles on the wall, but it is a bright shot, so can't judge by it.
3000Ringit?
That's over 900$?
Seems a tad to high to me...for my wallet...600$ I could see, but 900$? Half of a D300 or more than a D80???

I hope the high ISO performance will be very good. That's the only justification for me to buy a P&S.

cause a japanese retailer has been taking pre orders for around that price? :P
it doesn't really matter that it's a f4 lens. it's bright enough for a compact.

There are more images on this site:
http://www.dcviews.com/reviews/Sigma-SD14-Fuji-S5/@Sigma-SD14-Fuji-S5-samples.htm
Unfortunately they do not show side by side comparison of same image taken with RAW and jpeg...
That 400ISO shot indoors, with lamp shades and some dudes sitting there, 3rd from bottom, has some nasty color plotches in teh shadow area of the yelloish wall and on the lamp shades as well...
Hope this is just NR of camera or jpeg processing and raw images are better....

Yep, that's true, most likely same type of sensor used in DP1.
If they haven't improved data output that's what one will get.

sensor might be the same but they changed the imaging processing pipeline, hence the delays. so, i think its abit unfair to compare it to the sd14
