Well cameras all already going that way since last generation, Sony Alpha series has DRO (which looks HDR like on the highest setting) and Nikon has D-lighting.

The HDR merge, alignment and tone mapping take a lot of CPU power though, even with my rig Photomatix takes a while to churn out the Tonemapped version.

I don't see it realistically being included in cameras.

I do hope they do more work on expanding dynamic range though, Fuji SuperCCD is a step in the right direction. Stop the megapixel race and concentrate on image quality!

The D3 shows Nikon is following that path too.
