View Full Version : Welcome to Shutter Asia - New Member Introductions

Hi all, when you joined the forum do take a little time to introduce yourself here and let us know a bit about how you got into photography, how you ended up at Shutter Asia and what you would like to contribute or see from the forum.

For me I'm one of the founders of Shutter Asia, British but living in Malaysia for the past 3 years. I'm a big fan of Nikon equipment (http://www.shutterasia.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=13) ;) and moved from PnS to dSLR in mid 2006. I found the high noise factor limiting and the lack of DoF due the tiny sensor, I got a D70s first of all but I'm currently using a D200 (which I'm very happy with!).

I do believe however the camera is just the tool to take pictures, a better camera doesn't take better pictures and you'd be surprised what some people can do with camera phones (http://www.shutterasia.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=29)!

Work more on your concepts, creativity and composition and your photos will be great whatever camera you use.

I've found a great interest in Photography now and the wonderful people who also enjoy it.

I hope we can build Shutter Asia into a fantastic community for photographers and travelers all around Asia!

Please no Off-topic discussion here, no welcomes etc, one post per person for this thread. Any others WILL be deleted.

Me is Freaky... also called the FatmanShip and the clown... :jester:

Me a HKBABC (Hong Kong Born Australian Bred Chinese). I got into photography in Dec 2006. Decided to go to the white side as I'm looking to go into full frame (hopefully not in the too far distant future)

To me photography is like art. It's a personal thing. Some will like ur pic, other won't. Doesn't matter... So long as you have fun doing it...

That's the whole point of life... go and enjoy it :)

Hi I'm masao, and I guess most of you know me better as michhy.

Hailed from PM (the site we love to hate) and I downgraded from large cameras to tiny ultracompacts due to the nature of my work (travel....)

I'm a hobbyist photographer. Nice knowing you all. Cheers.

I'm Jack...Jack...purely from Penang, Malaysia :?

Before I have my own camera I already start clicking with my fren's Pns. In Dec2004, I finally got myself a Canon A400 and start to serious in photography with the PnS, read a lot, and shoot a lot.

After 1 year with the PnS, i know I can't go further with the PnS any more. I start to save money, try to find a better camera to continue shooting. Canon S3IS was in the list as my budget was around there only. But then I know I will not satisfy with this S3IS for long...so I decide to go for DSLR.

Finally, December 2006, I got enough money to buy myself a DSLR, Canon 350D. Money from the little bit bonus and my hard saving....;)

And I'll still continue shooting and learn at the sametime

:firing: for live!:firing:

Caveman
03-15-2007, 05:50 PM
Caveman I am, seldom leave the cave. Talk less and shoot more normally with bunch of crazy ideas.

I bought my 1st SLR camera Minolta X-700 since I was in form 3 with all my saving and angpow collected, it was really very long ago. I wasn’t serious about photography until recently. In fact, I should put it as I gave up a few times due to workload and non of my friend is shooting, no one to give guidance and teaching. Luckily, we have a forum like this to make lot of friends and exchange knowledge.

I love photography. :drunk:

Hello kaki! Im yannick from Sg Lembing! haha Sg lembing boy, ah chow always call me tat. hehe I interested into photography since secondary school, tat time i still using friend's film's camera and cheap one. Just got the feeling to photograhing, we always climb up to the sg lembing top hill and stay over nite there, wait for the sunrise. I love shooting sunrise, its so nice the feeling to see sunrise. I bought my 1st PNS Olmpypus e100 camera when i study in university (UKM), bangi. That time helping my lecturer to do reseach and earn some money to buy this PNS camera. So happy to own this camera that time. After i step into this "realistic working life" in KL, i was so busy and tired in my job and i stop shooting photo untill last year august when i read 350D promotion package with a free zoom lens, i lost my mind and bought this 350D at the camera shop in Sg Wang, and i know so many photography kaki in forum photomalaysia. Life become a different story to me, and i want this photography hobby to continue cheering my life, and everyone in this world. CheersS! :D

derickuan
03-15-2007, 07:12 PM
The name is derickuan and the guys sometimes address me as DK.

I took up photography in 2001 when I bought my first SLR camera, Pentax MZ7. Learning photography then was not much fun as there is limited resource to explain the technicalities of using the camera in a proper way. From print film, i develop a favour to use chroma B&W films and later on slides. My favourite film is still Fuji Provia for slides and Fuji Superia 200 for print films.

When the wave of affordable digitals SLR came, I was, at first, quite skeptical to use digital cameras as I told myself reluctantly, film still better than digital. Opinions changed when I get to check out the pictures taken with a Nikon D70. In 2005, I switched to digital completely as I got more control with my pictures and was quite tired with the time wasted waiting for the slides to develop and time wasted for the slides to develop to prints plus throw in the money wasted for the processes. With digital, I learn more in a year than what i did 4 years with film but I have to tribute mainly due to the vast resources in the internet on photography especially forums like this where you get to learn from others and exchange of ideas.

I'm just an hobbyist in photography and hopefully one day I got to own a professional camera like the Nikon D2X in the future. I'm a fanboy of Nikon products..hehe :whipped:

Gojira
03-15-2007, 08:42 PM
While my name is Gojira, I'm not 30-storeys tall, green and spiky. I do however, have radioactive breath and am a sucker for punishment :whipped:

I bought a Panasonic FZ5 prosumer camera in May 2005 and soon upgraded to a Nikon D70s by November. You'll find me involved in lotsa gear and nonsense talk but I do post photos occasionally....

Oh yeah....I'm supposedly ShutterAsia's resident epicurean......my appetite matches my nick! Probably one of the few Sarawakians in this forum currently...so if you hail from Kuching...let's go for laksa!

NOthing interesting about me.. But i did started out photography in a rather unexpected way, 15 yrs ago, got a manual film camera... and took me almost 5 months to learn how to use it, plus all the rolls of film i wasted. :D Heck it was cheap lar then.

Got a real break and some form of exposure in England but had a stop of it for almost 7 years. Now back trying to recall what i actually learnt :P

Enjoy yourself. oh yea if you ever want to go somewhere and shoot, this is what i learnt, never ever bring someone who doesnt like your hobby or your interest, most of the time they will be trying to get you to entertain them instead :D

sampoerna
03-16-2007, 12:11 AM
Some call me Sam, some call me Sampo. My nick has nothing related to where I am from. If you can guess, it is a famous weed from Indonesia and I am consuming those daily to ease my stress besides from shooting all the way using my camera.

I have a long list of pretty model in my contact book and yet I have so less time and interest to take a nice portrait of them. Some asked me where do I get to know all these pretty gals and my answer is hang around with few of them and your list will automatically multiply in no time.

My photography is about what I see and what I like to captured for remembrance. Therefore, you will see most of my photos is out of composition. Some said I am born with no talent and I have to agree with the statement made.

I started with film and broke spending all my $$ developing over exposed photos. I continued my photography using digital camera. Owned a 1.3MP, 2.0MP, 4.0MP, 5.0MP and now on 6.0MP digicam.

Name's Jay Han.
Well... what can I say about photography and myself... I've always been mesmerized by artistic stuff, and photography is one of those form of art which can be easily "made" - unlike painting or drawings and carvings. My very first camera was a nikon film compact. i roasted it after accidentally submerged it into a waterfall  then later stage, i got myself a casio exilim. At that time, it was only 2mpx and it was already like so cool. Then after I started working, I moved on to a SONY W5 pns...although I really would wanna have a DSLR at that time. Brought the black box to England where I am now and shot many stuff. It was fun... I finally made the DSLR plunge here in England and got a 350D package. Shot even more stuff after that as it was like opening a pandora's box to creativity.:)

I'm now very much into pursuing flash photography and would wanna try master the techniques of location studio portraits. I'm a strong believer of post processing techniques. It makes a good photo - better, and a better photo - awesome. I'm also a believer in contributing as much as I know to the community which deserves it... so occasionally you will find some DIY articles or photoshop tutorials from me posted up in here. I'll be looking forward to go back Malaysia to shoot alongside you fellas :)

Cheers!:D

I'm Ah Chow, very old sales manager in KL...sigh~~. I started taking photograph after saw Maria Sarapova playing tenis and clicking S2IS in cinema...hehe...I bought a S2IS in July 2005, then bought FZ50 in September 2006. So that makes me a prosumer user, and i can't afford to have a DSLR system yet. My favourite subjects are landscape, city scene and still objects.

Hi I'm Wei-Ming, commonly known as Ming

Hmm well, I started photography just a couple of years ago when I was presented a Nikon Coolpix 4100. I started taking photos since, and have not stopped.

I was always leaning towards the artistic side and hence got slightly obsessed with photography. I then got a Canon Ixus 55 in Jan 2006 to venture more into this amazing world. It was there when I realised that I wanted this to be a big time hobby. It was May and I had already read up quite a lot about photography altough I'm still learning. It never stops. One day I got reading about DSLRs and then late October, got my first DSLR - The Canon EOS 400D

Since then, I've been in the pursuit of becoming a better photographer. Early December my friends got me a 50/1.8 and I've been shooting with it and my kit lens.

Me, now getting interested in flash photography but can't afford it at the moment. I don't mind shooting any sort of photography but always seem to find portraiture in my CF card!

I like the looks of this forum and would love to learn more from you guys. May we all learn together,
- m i n g

Hi all

Some of you may know me already. I'm glad to see the birth of a new forum but in order to be truly progressive, I hope we can all chip in to make it the best one to learn and share. That said, to achieve this, we must not only work on our photographic skill but also constructive critique. It won't work if we just praise each other to no end and also it won't work if we keep buying new equipment simply to try to make it the only element to differentiate our photos from others'.

Let's make this a warm and friendly place to share our thoughts. If it's a good photo, say why. If it's not say why too. Be prepared to defend your own photo. If you had put enough thought into it before you released the shutter, then you would have some good reason to do so.

A photo forum, like any enthusiast forum, requires content that is both relevant to beginners and experts.

Grant S.
04-02-2007, 08:45 AM
Hi all,
My name is Grant S., and my Flickr set is under that name, but I have also used the screen name Intensecure for many years.
I am an ex-pat Brit, married to a Malaysian for the last 18 years, but have only settled in Malaysia in the last 2-3 years. Too much travelling until recently to really call it settled :)
I first got into photography at (ex-pat) school in Holland, back around 1980, and my first camera was a Zenit Russian SLR 1980 Moscow Olympics special edition :D The only accessories that I was able to scrape up for were a Sunpak flash unit, and a no brand 135mm lens. Took as many pictures as I could afford, and learnt basic darkroom skills, as my school was fortunate enough to have the facilities and a decent photo club. In 1989 I bought one of the first Nikon compact zoom 35mm cameras, and used it everywhere I went. I still have thousands of prints and slides from the last 20 years to catalogue and scan :0
First digital camera: Fuji 2600 2mp.
2nd & Current camera: Panasonic FZ30. Post process everything with DxO Optics Pro (amazing software!), and simply organise in Picasa. No Photoshop skillz!
I have resisted the DSLR route so far, because I take pictures for personal memories, and travel shots, and because I would undoubtedly bankrupt myself buying glass for a DSLR, because I have no resistance when faced with shiny objects of desire. The FZ30, although limited in some ways, is damn convenient with IS and 12x zoom. My only accessories are a tripod, spare batteries, SD cards, and a circular polarising filter. A simple outfit.
I'm definitely here to learn, because I would like to become more proficient and develop a better eye for detail, and to be in touch with local photographers who can teach me a thing or two about shooting in Malaysia

Edit: Just went out today, 3rd April, and bought a Canon A550 as a carry everywhere camera, the FZ30 being a bit too big for that. What a fantastic little camera it is - simple, yet excellent quality.

Sold FZ30.

June update: Now completely spoiled ;) - Bought a Pentax K100D (fabulous camera) with kit lens, Pentax smc FA 100-300mm, Pentax smc FA 50/1.4, AF280T flash, filters etc. and enjoying every minute of a new hobby! :) Workflow= Convert to DNG, work in Lightroom. That's all I need.

I'm mamakap, I work as a cook in one of the mamak stall in PJ.*

My first camera was a Nikon F series, now gone digital with red ring on the lens. But I miss those days where films you stay in a "Dark room" all alone doing your things. :D

*If you believe me then I got nothing to say.

I'm Jun Lin. I'm a Malaysian student but doing my BSc. in Australia. Interested in photography since that fateful December 2004 when dad bought a Sony DSC-P100 for family use. Switched to dSLR last August when Canon was giving away the a 90-300 for every 350D they sell.

Shooting whatever is nice, but with special interest in birds, landscapes, macros, and astrophotography, primarily for hobby, but my camera did make me some extra pocket money :p

Hello folks, boonster here, you may also call me boon.

I started my fling with photography about 2 years ago, my first digital camera was a 4MP Sony Cybershot (Stolen), and now I have owned a Ricoh Caplio R4 for almost a year now, love this little pockatable.

I've been following the forum from your 'previous home', tho I did not register as a member, but dicided to do so in this 'new home'. And like most of the newbies who stay here long enough, I'm slowly being poison into the DSLR world:)

I'm not really that ambitious in what i want to do with photography, just wanna be able to take pictures, as good as those in the National Geographic Magazine:)

Love photography ever since saw dad's old film bod when still a child. Still love old manual bods.

Finally bought me own F80 in my late 30s - no regrets. Though I don't have time or $$$ to take pictures consistently, SA has proven invaluable for :
1. Learning from comrades via the forums or outings
2. New friendships
3. Being a window portal to other worlds/cultures

Straight shootin' straight talkin' I am. Mostly shoot with office D70s unit with kit.

a-hem ..... very much a wanna-be :D :D :D

Hi I am Kenny T from KL,

I have been into photography for about 2 years plus. My interest started in my school days from playing around with my dad's old Konica. First camera was a Sony P7 and then later to Lumix FZ5. Bought my first Nikon DSLR in 2006, it was like falling in love all over again. :D

04-11-2007, 11:22 AM
Hi there ShutterAsians :) I'm blur (aka meendee).

The thing that initially sparked my interested in photography was the ability of capturing and freezing the moment.

I started out with the Nikon Coolpix 775, and then somehow I got sucked into the Canon bandwagon with the Powershot A70, and now currently A620 and 350D.

I go by the tagline "crappy, happy-snappy me" coz I'm the happy-trigger kind. I practically shoot anything and everything! And well, most of my shots are crappy ... but ocassionally I DO end up with some nice ones *LOL*

Cheers :drunk:

scott
04-11-2007, 10:39 PM
Hi all

I'm Scott. I am an Aussie living in Jakarta. I'm what you might call a computer nerd in my professional life, actually a manager of computer nerds to be more precise :-)

As a photographer, I describe myself as "an enthusiastic amateur with professional expectations"

How did I get into photography...?

Well, in my previous career I was a lighting guy and worked in the TV, film, theatre, concert and exhibition industries...

When I got way too involved in computers I needed a creative outlet.
I love light so I thought why not get a "light bucket" and capture light for fun.

The irony is I prefer not to use artificial light in my photos. I much prefer natural light (or "oysters" as it is referred to in film slang).

With composition I try to break the rules (or ignore them more like it) and just 'feel' the right framing and balance. I think this works most of the time.

I shoot a pretty wide range of subjects - not ready to specialise just yet.
I do have a fascination with the statues used in parks and memorials. I try to bring out the humanity and emotion created by the sculptor. (I would love some feed back on my FlickR (http://www.flickr.com/photos/sa-photo/)site about this point)

That's about it.

Cheers

Scott

hi all, i'm kj from kuching, currently working in brisbane, australia.

found this interest when i volunteered myself taking photos for those curriculum activities back in the old school days. it was not until the end of my second year in uni that i got my first camera - nikon 3700. upon graduation i got the panasonic fx01 and have passed on to my sis. i just got the canon 400d 2 months ago and havent had the time to get around shooting with it. instead my sony ericsson w850i comes in handy whenever i travel for work.

photography is something that touches my heart. and i hope i can take better photos that touches someone elses.

Hi all, my name is Lee from Penang but currently in Singapore for work purposes. Into photography ever since I was in secondary school with a Yashica Me-6 film camera and I am still using it occasionally. Its a nice camera with not much of a function.

Changed to a Nikon DSLR early this year and ever since, I am trigger happy ... :D (please understand, film users are very conservative but when go digital, they tend to release or vent their frustration skali gus :D).

I am a noob with no talent with a DSLR. Trying hard to read and learn up from Pro over here. Everyone is my sifu...

Hi all. I'm Thomas from KK-Sabah "Land below the Wind" as well, settled down in PJ for almost 20 years.

Have been keen in photography for quite sometime but never take it seriously, maybe due to workload (work from afternoon till midnight most of the days), when ever I've spare time, I will try to stick around with my family.

Starting with the Kodak 35mm film compact when I was 10, when I went to college, need to attend photography classes, got myself the 1st slr - Minolta X300, then, Nikon FE, FM10. My 1st PnS digital cam was Nikon Coolpix 775, then Canon A40, and now keeping my Canon A70 and just 4 days ago bought an used Nikon D40. Mainly taking family pictures, especially... my two daughters and my lovely camera shy wife.

I like this forum very much and felt like home... hope to learn and share with everyone of you.

Hiya, I'm a noob at photography. My first camera was my dad's old Minolta film camera. It was great while it lasted. I would snap at everything to my parents' frustration.

I now own two cameras; a Nikon L3 and a Panasonic Fz7. I'm still learning how to handle the Fz7. There are a lot of manual functions that I do not know how to use yet.

Hopefully lah... all in due time.... with help from you guys.

Hi, I'm Coz131 ala cozzie from Sibu, Sarawak but currently studying in Melb. I ended up here from VF through CM/ST.

I'm still very much a noob in photography for sometime now but always has been very interested in advancing my knowledge. Ive always a bit of a perfectionist in theory and I cant stand those awful camwhore pictures that floats around, thus why I am here.

My gear is a Canon G7 that has been soaked in clothing softener. Amazingly after going through that and a rinse in my sink it still sort of works nor have time or money to fix it. =D

Hi there,

I'm Eugene who now resides in Seri Kembangan. I'm originally a Penang boy who got transplanted to KL 8 years ago, but very much a Malaysian at heart.

I have used borrowed P&S film cameras in the past.

My first foray into digital photography is an old Konica/Minolta DImage XT. That old faithful has served my purposes well for my mainly low-light levels setting shots (usually EV -1.3 at highest ISO setting of 400!)

Recently, as the price of dSLR has dropped to affordable levels and my DImage has outserved and outlived its purpose, plus a friend who has not stopped raving about his D80, I bought myself the entry-level D40 + kit lens Nikon dSLR followed by the 50mm f/1.8 AF-D (MF) two days thereafter.

I am now bitten by the camera bug and can't stop shooting stuff.

From here, I intend to proceed slowly through some serious photography projects so that I can intimately know the capabilities of my start-up gear, improve on my newbie skills, then purchase some extra gear (the 55-200 mm VR looks interesting), with a goal of entering into photo-journalism documenting a myriad of common issues.

Hi,
I started with Konica ps (not remember model) at 12 gave by my late father. I like it so much. So shoot here and there like mad. Then in secondary most of the year past by as photography club member. Lots of tech & tips taught by my advisor teacher (though some his ideas lost as I'm grown up). Then I went to the college and bought a Yashica slr FX something I don't recall in 1990. After study, it has been with me for 5 years. Then its start to rosak here and there. For 10 years I left photography. Then I think something missing in my life. The desire come back. So in 2000, I bought ps camera a few and then 2003 Dynax 300i, 2005 Fujipix 5500 and lastly got into slr 30D. I'm going to learn start from zero. As I have lost most about SLR camera. So guys do help me to groom this magnificent hobby, so I can show what is the missing part of this world that we have left out.

Hello! Just wanted to say hey and that i'm new here. Mr. Crazymalaysian told me about this forum and i thought i'd join! I'm in London studying right now but home is KL! Started off with manual cameras at the end of 2005 but i just recently got a DSLR this year, so i'm still pretty much learning new things about it. I love taking music related photographs (gigs, portraits, inspired by, etc) and whatever catches my attention! OK, that's all!

Hi all,

I'm Zook. Just joined the forum today after reading The Star. I've joined DCM forum (although not that active in posting..learning and learning..:D), also subscribe to the mag and I saw several familiar names in here.
Started off during my early years with my father's Olympus camera - of which i've never get a chance to snap it with a film :D - Bought a cheap camera from pasar malam which cost me RM20 at that time..but was hold back on the cost for "washing" the film.. pocket money not enuff laa on those days.
In 2001, I started to play around with my office's digital camera (Canon A410) and find it very convenient and easy to use. Then, i bought a Nikon Coolpix 4100 for a start. Now, I've owned a nikon D50, 18-200mm VR lens and SB800. Still learning..reading..and trying slowly to be better and better..with the help of other sifus :):)..
Any member from JB, feel free to PM for a TT okey...others are also welcomed :):D. Kindly give early notice yaa....

Read about Shutter Asia in The Star the other day and decided to check it out..............and registered after checking it out. I am a newbie in the dSLR scene. Have been using Olympus mu410 for my work and travels. Still using it. Mananged to get some good pics iduring my Turkey, Sri Lanka and Siem Reap vacations and a few work related shots as well. So I figured I have a small knack for digital pics. I thought i'd give the higher end a try and bought Sony alpha recently. Need to use the tripod more as my hands are like jelly.....tremble, tremble, tremble

I hope I can find my feet and learn the basics plus more.

hi, i m lai here, never like photography at all, all this while thought photography is a art and i m not an art person, i fail my music and i fail my art subject in school, frens play with it and i hav no idea what they talk about.

finally got myself a D50 because i wanted to capture nice shot when i went to china for backpack for about 3 weeks. realise that D50 and kit lense is so limited and nothing much i can do, half of the picture i take is crap picture and wasted my efford. lucky still got the other half is in ok condition ( in the case, i took about thousand of picture, so should have 20%-30% in a acceptable condition. and i tell myself i am going to capture all the great shot next time when i go for backpacking again.

The more i learn and the more i explore, i finally understand what is DSLR and i use 2 months just to learn what is exposure, aperture, white balance from the forums and still a lot i dun understand, but finally can get the basic understanding and usage of DSLR.....i like it so much now and i got hook....haha

photography is just so fun now...love it so much....

09-27-2007, 08:17 AM
Hi, my name is Redzuan. Just graduated and picked up the hobby at first to take pictures whenever I go traveling when I was in college. Started off with a compact in 2002 with the Olympus C2 zoom, very limited budget. Got myself a better camera in 2005, Canon G5 which gave more consistency and better quality. Got the G5 because didn't have enough for a G6 at that time. Really a great compact camera closely matching an SLR functionality.

Thats where I learn so much more, mostly by myself. But luckily there are so many guide and reference on the internet for help. By the end of 2006 is when I felt I was prepared to get serious and the G5 can no longer satisfy my needs for manual controls and also picture quality. I got myself a Nikon D50 for $400 at the time which was a steal. Also because of my budget constraint again. It was actually for a 2 weeks trip to the West Coast of America.

Now working, its somewhat hard to find time to get out and really enjoy photography for me but I certainly do it whenever I feel I have the time. Would like to go into the Malaysian wilderness and capture some of its best kept secret to share with friends and families (I love nature). Hope to get to know some of the other members here who would love to go hiking, camping and photography just as I do.

I found this site when I was looking for a good 2nd hand deals and was directed to this website. Didn't know it was quite a big community where I think I will definitely benefit from.

Nice to meet you all. Yoroshiku!:partyon:

Hi there,

I am MC...but my alias here is lu_fc2001....(anyone knows what is that name linked to? hint : former epl now unbeaten in League One)...;)

I started taking a liking to photography as it runs in my family...my dad and my uncle were award winning shooters in their time...naturally i followed ..we had our own development photo lab and i remember I always like to follow dad in to develop the b/w i n the dark, the smell of the phorphorous, the little red light...i started with a ME Super, pentax slr film then. Used that faithfully thru my early years and my wedding and countless friends weddings. I always remember that I will be carrying minimum 10 rolls of film, finishing about half in the morning, rushing to develop them in the 1 hour development shops, n showing it off during the night's dinner.

I stopped for a number of years, going back to simple P&S cameras, from pentax, to olympus to canon. Then the itch got back again and I finally got my first DSLR, the Pentax K100D super 2 sundays ago. I forgot how I managed with the manual exposures since then....after the past few years of all this automation, i guess i got to relearn again.

So here is to the new beginning, the Digital SLR chapter in my life.
:partyon::rasta::tongue_roll:

In March 2007, I attended a 10 lessons course on photography. At that point in time I was having a compact camera, still not very sure of getting a SLR initially. The course ended in May. Later, when I saw the lovely pictures taken by some coursemates who were using SLR camera I was motivated to acquire one. Then in late June 207, I decided to buy one which I used it for the 1st time when the whole class went to Pulau Perhentian for photo shooting. Using D40x,kit lens & a 70-300mm Nikon VR lens.

Shutterasia is my favourite spot to find out what's happening in photography.

Hi everyone,

Like most of us here, I'm a newbie to photography too. I got so addicted to it a couple of months ago when my son was born back in April.

I just love taking potraits and now wanting to learn more in different areas.
I just got my new canon 350D last month and been practicing with it since.

Well, I have been struggling with my photos especially when taken in RAW mode and then converting them.

I joined Shutterasia because someone recommended me (Jackyyong).
I do hope shutterasia can help me improve on my photography and advice me.

Hi I'm Shazeea, 19 years old and in KL.

I just got a Canon EOS 400D over the weekend, the second SLR in the family (the first being an analogue from ages ago). Before that I was shooting with a Panasonic Lumix that had practically lost its LCD and that doesn't have a viewfinder. I'm looking to learn really quickly because I leave for Egypt in just over a week!

Oh yes, and I have to share the camera with my mum and 3 younger brothers.

hi,
i m azmi. just noticed this thread. started off with kodak instamatic given by my dad before it got stolen. then my first slr fujica st705 from my late mum. later a gift from my wife minolta 7000.
back to pns minolta riva 35-70mm years later which my daughter donated to a shop in penang during her school trip. i got myself an olympus mju II AW another pns later.

My first digicam was sony 717 which got stolen 1 year later. Bought a Nikon 5700 which had a CCD problem(nikon took sometime to replace the CCD) that made me bought this D50. i am just a hobbyist.

Nice to know you guys.

Hi everyone,

I logged in as aeraychius but friends normally call me Nick. I am totally new to the whole photography scene basically sticking to compact cameras. Up till recently a good friend of mine and her husband has been enticing me with beautiful pictures taken on the DSLR Nikon cameras which has got me bitten by the bug.

As basically a baby at this, at the moment I am considering either a Nikon D40x or a Canon EOS400D.

Maybe someone could point me towards the right direction.

Thanks

Welcome to SA! There's plenty of resources you can read. Some links are posted here, while others can be found via Google or other search engines. Or, you can pick up a copy of photography magazines for some shooting/editing tips :) You can also take a look at other people's collections to get ideas and composition styles. And start shooting extensively :D

I'm using DSLR for past 1 years, starting with Canon 400D + 18-55mm (kit) + Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 + Tamron 55-200mm + Canon 50mm 1.8 + BG-E3 + Speedlight 430 EX + Lowepro Slingshot 200AW.

Nowdays, I'm changing to a Nikon system. Currently I'm using Nikon D80 + MB-D80 + 18-135mm (kit) + SB800 + Lowepro Compudaypack. Crazy with this thing since using it from my friends.

Hi,
I'm Wai Wah, quite sometime here in SA but havent give some introducion here.. heehee

Curently work as graphic designer in a advertising agency.

During art school was using Minolta Dynax505si (lecturer suggestion) for few semester for photograhy. Lecturer suggest me to pursuing in photograhy carrer as he saw my patient and some "skill" on it. However i didnt, coz i interested on graphic design that time.

After few years working now, my 1st digital camera was Sony Alpha 100.
I didnt realise Sony already take over Konica Minolta. It was coincidence after i realise de shutter sound was sound so familiar... heehee.

My interested to photograhy seems come back....
After a year plus, i switch to Alpha 700.

Found SA have a same objective for other forum, but has its on target, passion & unique in it. Especially for my opinion, i like the "Shutter Asia" logo (have asian oriental feel)

Well, i think thats about it... lets "keeping photograpy alive"
^^

Was a guest for several months and finally joined as a member just before going for the recent SA 1st Ann trip. Enjoyed myself v.much on that trip and got my SA Membership card as well. Car sticker is on my rear windscreen, so honk if you see me.
Members here are friendly, unselfish with their advice and easy going whenever we meet up whether for shooting or TT or gathering.
Was a film user until about 10 yrs ago but lost interest when digital first started. The dslrs were too expensive and I was not impressed with the IQ then. So I bought prosumers for scuba diving and snapshot pictures.
All that changed when I recently tested the D3/D300. My interest is re-ignited again but unfortunately my job requires long hours on weekdays so I only have time to shoot on weekends or holidays.
Still learning digital as its very different from analog technically but enjoying it very much. Looking forward to opportunities to shoot. Currently enjoy portrait, product macro, landscape. Photo-journalism, street-shooting and outdoor macro is also very interesting and am trying that out as well. Well no need to rush and I'll take it a step at a time. Its a hobby to be enjoyed, not to be stressed out over.
Have met many of the longtime members here including freaky,ShaolinTiger,Noordin, lordmint, nfariz, mitmiv ec,noruazumi,alan_drg,orionmystery,Eagleeyes,Bunny ,alicialph,etc.. too many to mention..,plse don't be offended if I left out your nick even tho I've met you but far too many....
Everyone is here because they love to shoot pics and to learn as much as possible. Hopefully we can organise more trips to learn from each other.Looking forward to outdoor shoots such as Sg Lembing, Tmn Negara and perhaps to Danum Valley in Sabah.
Its great to be back in photography.

05-13-2008, 12:17 AM
Hi, I'm Goh, some call me Macgyver....may be I'm too creati.....
I bought my 1st Film SLR way back in 1990, a Canon EOS 1000, later having problem with the sticky curtain and send to one of the most popular camera service center in Klang...that time Peremba is not around yet.....took more then 3 months for the service due to "parts difficult to get", getting back the camera after a very long and expensive repair.....problem still the same. Gummy stuff apear on the shuttle curtain causing jammed curtain and created half exposed negative....then decided to quit photography for good... During this dark ages, I got my self a Canon G3 compact, then Fuji S5000 to toy around with digital photography....

In Jan 2006 after the debut of Malaysia hottest Photography magazine at RM8.00 per issue...I started to plan for by 1st dSLR.......earlier choice was Olympue E330, then E510, E3 (fancy about the live-view)........wait and wait and on March-08 decided that it is time for me to get the Canon 40D with 17-85mm std Zoom len.......so far after 2.5 months and more than 2000 shots everything seem to be ok with the camera except there was a dark shodow on the top part of the view finder and send to Peremba for service, got it back the next day...what a efficient service center....

Future plan is to take my Canon 40D travel all over Indonesia, start with Sumatera....as I'm working in Medan now....to take all the wonderful scenery in this beautiful country......then may be Beijing Olympic in August.....looking for a telephoto zoom lens now.....70-300mm F2.8 or F3.5-4.5.....

Satindolls
05-21-2008, 12:45 AM
Dear folks,

As many of you wonder what kind of nickname am I using (on purpose) for this forum, I chose Satindolls merely to match my current event webpage name but I am actually male, who prefers to be called Ong (in Hokkien, KING).......what got me dabbling a bit into photography was about 14 years ago, I won the first prize of my former employer's dinner's lucky draw - a Pentax automatic film camera - but never realized that one fine day it would be a truly awesome hobby but film processing then cost me quite dearly only because of photo prints as the JPG format was almost unheard of then....

Fast forwarding now........I had a so-called "break" from photography for about 5 years from 1999-2004 owing to the fact that I was still struggling with my career then, and in 2004 I purchased my first ever digicam, a Canon A400 and a couple of years later it got stolen and last year I managed to get hold of my current camera (AND STRUGGLING TO SELL IT OFF), the Olympus SP510UZ.......and now, a new silence has already been broken if you know by now, that I am a proud owner of a Canon EOS400D package :P so take a look at my signature below ya!

Cheerz

A. Ong (native of Western Perak State, currently residing in quite a famous residential area in Petaling Jaya North)

zamrudku
06-09-2008, 09:02 AM
Hi all..........

Should have done this long time ago. Well here goes...........I'm an accountant by profession, who's currently a consultant....or corporate fixer's more like it. I do lecture on weekends.....so basically photography is my hobby. Started with FG/FM2 in 1982....when film were the in-thing. Stopped briefly during the period of 1997 till recently I bought meself a D80. In between 2006, bought a Leica Digilux 2....just to tease meself.

As some of you might heard that I really hated the D80 the first time using it...due to comparisons to film, namely Velvia, Provia and the likes. At the time I know nothing about Photoshop.

Since then I have been teaching meself thru forums, internet search and books. So naturally I consider meself as a noob....DSLR young.

On my nick....zamrudku. Initially the nick was zamrud (or emerald in english)........when I was single due to my promise that I'll present the love of my life with an emerald wedding ring......I'm married now.......changed the nick to zamrudku. Coz me wife is 'my emerald' in me life.

So do refer me as zamrud............

Thats it.

hello hello hello !!!

I am Jack. I took up photography since last year. How do i hook up with photography ? Well, its all happens in that one fine day when i am just browsing around.... i came across a photo shoot by one of the guy in USA. His pictures are simply fascinating and each of these pictures are like talking to me... like the saying goes "A picture paints a thousand words".... I think it is more than just that. It is an Art by itself.

Thus i am now a what you call a shutter freak. Well almost. I can go supremely happy if i manage to get a good shot ! :)

oh, i m using a canon 400 D. with 18-55 kit lens.... and bought one 50mm prime f2.8. The plastic one. Cheap but very good !

:)

Anyway, nice to meet all of you here, and hope to learn more from all the masters and gurus in this forum. I started off photography with a compact digital Nikon 775 and used it for more than 5 years before getting myself a Nikon D80 with a 18-135mm kit lens. I'm very happy to own it :D

Looking forward and excited to learn techniques about landscape, macro and portrait photography and got inspired from the works of fellow members.

I am Leonard. A newly-registered member today.
I used to dabble in cameras during the days way back in the 60s when slr was dominating the scene. Back then I have (still have actually) an Asahi Pentax Spotmatic which my late father bought in Hong Kong during one of his trip.
Stopped for quite awhile to concentrate in my career and working life.
Recently started to take an interest back again especially now that it a world of dslr, quite a change from slr.Hope to start taking more photos from now on especially with one of the son being equally interested as well. Bought him a Canon 350D and later a 400D plus some lens accessories as well.

Welcome!

Perhaps u can try budgeting for the Kenko 3-ring Extension Tube (ET Set) which may cost a little less than RM500 in some retailers (this may be a pleasant start if you want to start dabbling with macro photography - just attach that Kenko ET to your 50mm f1.8......plus, maybe a Canon 55-250mm IS telephoto zoom lens that may fetch about RM800+ in some retailers - anyway, I only seriously started off photographing via DSLR since July 2008 and I am personally aiming to have those two accessories mentioned above within the 4th quarter of this year :D:gatal: Happy hunting anyway~!)

Hi Wenjing,

From what i know, your gear is already okay for starter. Like my PenangKia friends always said " Be a photo head, dont be a gear head ". Take picture until u bump into the limitation of your lenses, until then only u start thinking buying a new lenses. And while waiting for that.... save your money. Try to target for the external flash 1st. It can save our dSLR battery usage a lot.

Hello, I am cc, a Malaysian currently residing in Auckland, New Zealand. My photography journey started a few years back as it was part of a course I was taking, but it's not until about 3 months ago that I really gotten into it.

I believe that the beauty of photography lies on the eyes behind the viewfinder, not the gear. Every photo tell a stories.

I found this forum while blog-hopping and hope to learn more via sharing.

Hi , I'm Alex join SA early 2008.

Been using Camera click click click and pray for the past many years. Only this year started to explore everything of it after slowing my other activity of golfing, diving, spearing and fishing.

Bought my first entry level cam Yashica FX3 (still function but must spray WD40 in it) in early eighties and first digital in early nineties. Early digicam cost me RM1800 just for Cmos 0.35 megapixel Canon Powershot 350.

Cannot stand with many PnS KO after 2k-3k SC, I choose D60 this year after I find it small and light with 10 mega. I hope I will be guide by many good cameraman here to improve my shallow knowledge in photography. Thx:boohoo:

Hi I Zool,

Had my first camera, a plastic Diana made in HK and never turn back!
I like photography and live with photography. It's the thing you do with your self creativity. Creativity has no limits and that fascinates me. Wishing to share with all you guys ideas and admire their talents.

With digital photography, time moves very fast and be able to see works of other photographers including other parts of the world. Before, (with analogue cameras) you only got to admire professionals. Now anybody can shoot like a pro and let you express them.

This is a great site and one thing good it's Malaysian born.

Cheers!

Hi i'm Alan.... i started like to capture picture at 2006 when i having a college assignment, since then i started to capture some picture...but not too crazy about it 'cause by that time i'm using my brother's girlfriend's camera... right until 2007 which i had influence from my friend. I start to learn from myself, ask my friend and lecturer and read some tutorial from magazine which it really help me alot. But no matter how much i learn there is still limitation for me, so i have actually to capture for the college event and others...so that i can actually learn and observe the way to capture... I hope to make friend with some proffesional photographer and everyone who are interesting in photography....so that i can learn something..and by the way nice to meet you all!!!

I am a new member to the forum. I have dabbled in photography as a hobby in the early 1960s during my school days. However when I.T. (information technology) came to Sabah in the early seventies, I switched to computers starting with the Sinclair Spectrum. I still have my Asahi Pentax Spotmatic with me but digital cameras have now taken over the scene completely so it is kept in the display cabinet.
