Good news to all Nikon D40/D40X/D60 users. If Nikon tells you that your camera battery grip does not exist, Nikon is only half right. This is when third party manufacturer comes into play. Nikon D40/D40X/D60 does not have external trigger socket, so YXTM ND40TS uses infrared to trigger your Nikon D40/D40X/D60. Similar design to most battery grip, able to take two EN-EL9 rechargeable batteries, attach to body tripod socket, tripod socket at the bottom of battery grip allows you to mount your camera onto tripod, an on-off switch to switch off battery grip when not using, yet still power the camera. Nikon D40/D40X/D60 users gonna love this. Time to get one and start shooting some hot babes portrait, in portrait composition of course.

This it seem to be a good solution...until u try it and realize tha infra-red dont work the way it should be...and that...infra-red to work need to be activated in the camera...so...if activated...cannot use the horizontal shutter...which means...always changing settings in the camera while changing from vertical to horizontal.
i think we deserve a better solution....still waiting...

The is the only solution for a 3rd party battery grip on Nikon D40/D40X. This is not due to the design of the battery grip, but due to the fact that Nikon D40/D40X does not have any remote cord connector. The only way to trigger it remotely is by using the infrared, which is how YXTM trigger the shutter.
Yet still a lot D40/D40X users purchase YXTM battery grip because D40/D40X body is too small for average men hand. Attaching the battery grip give a better handling. The battery grip holds two batteries which gives you extra shooting time. From customer feedback they find it useful especially shooting portrait, where fast shutter and lock focus is not crucial.
Here's a good discussion on D40 battery grip fr Nikonians forum.

well this grip is great for those who owns a D40 /x with a giant handgrip.
the verticle shuttler is just an extra.
most likely there wont be a real verticle grip for D40/x if i am not mistaken cause the camera build for any expension batt grip.
some how those "China" engineers will have to stip the camera apart and tap on those circuit board for a "true" verticle shuttle to work
and i just want to add in. "the plastic is abit cheapo feel but if you put in two batt. some how you feel more solid can confident :P .. just my 2cents
i think price can be cheaper :P
and where can i purchased the normal doubleA batt slot for the batt grip
cause i read through some of the site they do have the tray for doubleA batt

Hi Juman, i think there's some typo in ur post.
"most likely there wont be a real vertical grip for D40/x if i am not mistaken cause the camera does not build for any battery grip expansion."
I am very certain China engineers (their famous quote: "可以, 没问题", in English simply means, "can, no problem") has found a way to tap into D40/D40X circuit for a fully functional vertical grip. However this would mean modifying the camera circuit, in which case Nikon warranty will be void.
I am not sure why you want to use AA batteries on your D40/D40X. AA batteries is only for worst case scenario, i.e. you are in an absolutely remote area where AA batteries is the only batteries you can purchase if your Li-Ion batteries happen to break down. AA batteries can only give you 300 round of shots, whereas Li-Ion can go on for thousand of pictures. In this digital era, 300 shots is totally UNACCEPTABLE. Also Nikon D40/D40X circuit is not design to take AA charge, it's a risk to use AA batteries (if there's a way) on the camera. Don't force your Ferrari to take natural gas man.

I saw an identical item for sale at Excel Photo (formerly Merry Photo) at Jalan Penang, Penang. Few doors away, there is Mega Star Photo. I think they are selling too.

yes i do agree that for big hands would be good...or just for style...as for functionality i dont agree...as for the problem i said before...everytime u use it vertically...is necessary to turn on the infrared in the menu...as for then as to turn it off again to be able to use the original horizontal shutter...i did try it already...

Is there anyway to override the setting of the infrared in the D40 to make the horizontal shutter to work even if the infrared is activated?
The only function that works when the infrared is active is the focus. The shooting function doesnt work.
I did try to change the settings but nothing works.
So who use the vertical grip changing from horizontal to vertical shooting have to be always changing the settings...

Hi g5665,
You are correct. That's not the problem with the battery grip but a design feature (if you want to call it fault) on D40/D40X/D60.
The only way to do so is to crack/hack/modify the camera firmware.
I have no knowledge how to modify a camera firmware. This question need to bring directly to Nikon headquarter.
