I dig into my archive of colored images, but some looked flat and muted but converting to monochrome uplift some of them. I would like to share 2 of the images here...

Updating this part III of the B&W's, this afternoon i chanced upon an archived image and processed it with HSL grayscale controls in Camera Raw which essentially followed a book "B&W: Pipeline". The author Ted Dillard provides numerous tips on B&W processing. I have a go...and it was quite interesting

A scene of the Mosque of Straits of Malacca when night falls

Garlic 01-03-2010 06:10 PM

Uncle R :),

The mosque lighting is exceptional, but the foto was betrayed by the foreground :(
maybe a crop ?

ridzuan 01-03-2010 06:33 PM

actually i have already cropped, and I made the foreground darker as it was rather unsightly with the original exposure. Well, I guess you are right to crop a little more :)

photogenie 02-01-2010 11:46 PM

Very nice b & w series.

my recent trip to Jakarta provided some glimpse of the olden day Batavia scenes. I found out there are many photographers over there totting many types of camera and making me not an alien :)

6) Hitching a ride on a tiny sampan to access the old habour of Jakarta, called Sunda Kelapa. There are many wooden boats or rather ships which ply the many islands within the Indonesian archipelago

7) Corn Seller in the Fatahillah Square, near the old city of Jakarta

Cheers

nicole 05-01-2010 04:34 PM

I love all your photos. Hmm... Is there any tips you can give to capture square composition? Might want to try it out some day.

ridzuan 05-01-2010 06:18 PM

thanks nicole for the appreciation. While most of my photos are square, but there are also quite a numbers in 4x5 crops like pics 6 & 7 above synonymous to medium formats. I really do not have a hard-and-fast rule, but most shots are captured with wide angle lenses of 24mm and below. One of the tips is to fill the foreground subject rather large to get that overwhelming effect. An analogy is something like Clint Eastwood's gun barrel exactly infront of your lens :)

Sometimes for a square format, you can simply ignore the rule of third, and they work good as well. In my next posting below is a sample image that i think flaunt the rule. Keep trying and I am sure you will find that square or almost-square works for you.

have a good weekend, and I am going to the cinema for IronMan 2 :run_away:

Garlic 05-02-2010 12:15 AM

Uncle R back with a vengeance !

Ah Batavia, that is where I would like to go to shoot, so anymore oldies left to remind us of her days as the great trading port of the Far East ?

Hmmm square format that reminds me of the Hasselblad or Rolleiflex :D:D

mujib 05-02-2010 01:19 AM

oh great!
uncle R is back!
u always have a very nice pict :D

Do you know what is bunga wali :?:?

ridzuan 05-02-2010 08:59 PM

Uncle G,
You make me wonder as the name appears on the ship i posted. I wiki and found out that Bunga Wali apparently is not the name of a flower but a type of martial arts of silat originating from Java. At least I learnt something today ;)
