Soft Box or Beauty Dish

Which modifier is recommended for portrait shoot using speedlights?

1) If Softbox - recommended brand, size and approximate price
2) If Beauty Dish - recommended brand, size and aprroximate price

Thanks.

Both are recommended, both have pros and cons.

Using speedlight though I find shoot-thru and reflective umbrella most convenient and gives good light.

Yah, softbox is nice too, especially if you get a tri-flash bracket and a big softbox. Gives a tighter light than umbrella.

The best for a speedlight IMHO is the Wescott Apollo series.

Ring light is a good one to go for too if you like that fashion look, ring light gives a very distinctive light - but a proper one is expensive.

Beauty dish is cool, gives a more focused light. You can actually DIY a beauty dish without too much effort.

Softbox & umbrella
Both almost the same and generally hard to tell apart. Some say a softbox creates a more even and diffused soft lighting compared to umbrella. But for convenience, umbrellas are easier to pack.

Both are preferred for face/model portraits as it makes the pix "dreamy", soft-like and hides the flaws (eg pimples etc).

Beauty dish
Creates better "3D separation" (makes the portrait "pop"). Some like it, some don't. Also creates a circular catchlight in the model's eyes (preferred).

The DIY Beauty Dish looks cool.......Is there a lot of difference between the branded softboxes as compared with the not so well known brands? Btw what is the biggest softbox available for speedlight?

IMO, Westscott for Softbox. It does not require any speedring and you can insert flashes or studio strobes into it.
