Today's mystery ... 70-300 VR won't focus on D80

I was offering a Nikon 70-300 VR for sale, all terms agreed so went to meet buyer.
He forgot to bring battery, so have to focus manually. Then he said lens couldn't focus. I tried, and true enough, even at best focus, all was blurry.
So called off deal.
But I was puzzled since I had tried with my D700 this morning.
So I tried again, and it focuses just fine. Picture taken after I got home, few minutes ago.
Anyone ever encountered a lens that works fine on one body and not on another? He says his other lenses work fine with his body.

Maybe I should clarify ... by "won't focus", I'm talking about manual focus, not about the auto focus, since there was no battery in the body. It just cannot get the image sharp.

When you take out the battery from the body, the focusing screen becomes all blur, regardless of lens. Try it on the D700. It does the same if you remove the battery. Very likely, theres nothing wrong with the lens.

Try inserting a battery in the D80 and perhaps you will see the difference. Viewfinder dims out. I think this is applicable to most Nikons.

from my experience, this apply to D70s, D80, D90, D200, D300, D700, D40, D5000... all dim and can't be focus.

Does not apply to the D40, and I have checked.
