Errr, just like Unc Noordin encouraged me: JUST SHOOT! Actually, macro is in a way much easier, because you'll notice very quickly whether the framed pic/subject is sharp or not. You'll get the hang of it soon enough. Or for starters, you can try ST's money series
Once you get used to using the lens on inanimate objects, insects and others will come easier ... keep on shootin'!
