Found this in my mailbox.

ANNOUNCING A MAJOR NEW INTERNATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION TO DISCOVER EMERGING TALENT IN CONTEMPORARY PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY ACROSS MALAYSIA AND THE REGION

The KL PHOTO AWARDS 2009 is open to photographers from all nations, over 16 years, from full time students, enthusiasts, semi professional to professional photographers.

PROFESSIONAL CATEGORY

Winner
USD 3,000 & Trophy

NON PROFESSIONAL CATEGORY

Winner
USD 1,500 & Trophy

Each entrant will be required to submit up to 6 images, either in a series or individually titled.

The organisers have put together a panel of judges from the art, media and photography industries, each with years of practical experience within their own niche.

Why is it "KL" Photo Awards, but all fees and prizes are in USD not RM?

All these awards that require folks to PAY money to enter... just be careful. It's like playing 4D... thousands of ppl buy, a few ppl win, Magnum make money.

And their panel of judges, who are they?

couldn't agree more, it already sounds fishy when the entry fees has to be in USD.

KL Photoawards 2009

Dear eddjnv and astroboy,

The details of the judges are listed in the website. They are chosen from a variety of art and media disciplines. The entry fees are levied as are in most international awards where there are no manufacturer sponsorships. The fees are used to offset the costs of hiring the exhibition venue, printing of catalogues and finalists images and promotional material.

USD is quoted as this competition is open internationally, although centred in Malaysia. We are already receiving pro-entries from Russia, Italy, USA and India.

The fall in the costs of camera equipment have enabled many people to own dSlrs, lenses and memory cards over the last few years. Digital photography is more accessible than ever. Hence the awards is an attempt to seek out those keen photographers that have the ability to make special images from their equipment and use their creativity to produce outstanding portraits, that are not equipment centred.

Secondly, it is the organisers wish to promote KL to the world, in terms of photography, and we are proud to have Time Out KL as our supporter in this event.

Best wishes,

KL Photoawards 2009

Pay for entries => Commercial competition with marketing purposes
Recognition & Nomination => Award

sorry, that's my understanding.

I sit on the panel of judges for a regional event that gives out Awards, too. And NONE of the nominees have to pay to participate.

And I don't remember nominees for the Nobel Prize having to pay for entrance fees, either.

As eddy pointed out, this is purely a profit-driven commercial venture. As such, participants should be reminded to enter with their eyes wide open.

If, let's say, after you collect the entrance fees and decide to close shop, where do the poor folks who paid good money find you? File a complaint with Small Claims Tribunal?

(I am reminded of case likes YogaZone, etc).
