My personal take : 16-35 & 85mm
16-35mm f4 is my default lens too. One fantastic piece of kit. One the long side I prefer a bit more than 85mm.
105 macro is more versatile.
Nice combo that one for a two lens kit.

I think 16-35mm f4 + 24-120mm f4 should be good enough... light weight!!
I won't be carrying my 28-70mm for traveling...!!! Ofcause I won't be carrying 28-70's bro 24-70 for traveling as well... damn heavy!!!

Think of what you want to shoot while traveling... landscape?? Go for wide & normal zoom then....
Don't tell me you are going for portrait shooting on a traveling trip!!

I sold my 16-35. I find it too wide for during my guilin trip. Now i limit myself to 24-70/85. Now i have to decide for other focal length o equipment for my coming napal trip... The date is approaching

The fx equivalent is 28-300 which I got last year for my d700. But on hindsight should have got the 24-120/f4. Hardly use the long end of the 28-300. Looking to sell it but heard that it's not so popular.

Be prepare to spend more time to correct lens distortion. I find that new nikon lenses has a lot of distortion. I think they assume you will perform the lens distortion in PP or use Capture NX2.

I sold all the new lens... now settle with Zeiss and current model which are not release release.

Chuah, I return the 28-300 the next day I got it. :-). If similar lens needed, I will recommend to go to DX 18-200.

i also have a 50mm 1.4 on hand.. only recently got my D700

heard that the new 24-85 VR is cheap and sharp.. price around the same as 24mm 2.8
