Unhappy Need Help On Lens Focusing Problems

Good Afternoon, need advise on my problem as below:

Got a 2nd hand nikkor 28-70mm f2.8 , i found that there was a focusing problem .I can feel some kind of motor rotation and motor sound inside the lens ,but it can't auto focus (the problems happen always when taking photo ) i need to manually rotate the focusing ring or focal length rings and press the shutter release button to shoot..

Can anyone help me what is the problems on my lens? Kecuali send to Nikon Services, any lens services centre is reliable to send for services?

Please help ... Thanks

Hi, I would like to share my experience with similar problem.

Previously, I had similar problem. In fact, I had problem with auto-focus on any lens I put on. Luckily I found somewhere on the internet that possibly there's dust on my focusing screen.

My opinion, try removing your body cap, point your camera to a light source or white surface (wall, paper, etc..) and through your viewfinder, look for any sign of dust or dots.

When I sent my camera to service centre, they just blow it off with air blower. But if you lack confidence to do it yourselves, just let them do it.

Another possible reason is there's fungus in the lens. Not sure if fungus would affect auto-focus or not.

I have same problem twice. Both times, it was the motor (silent wave motor) that needed replacements. The last time it was only in June 2012. The motor just stopped working completely.

-can't auto-focus/lock focus.

Best to send it for replacing the motor. I did it in Pudu Plaza. for a fee not more than RM 700/-, dun sell the lens, coz it is sweet and now out of production, just change the motor.
Just sharing my experience.

Try inspecting and cleaning the contact on the lens and the camera body, sometimes oxidation form on them and can cause issues. If after cleaning and the problem still persist, the next alternative is to get it to a Nikon service center for repair.

I've seen quite a number of the same problem, usually it's the flexible PCB inside the lens sticking out preventing the mechanism to rotate.

Here's some photos:

A flexible board sticking out

The solution: A good double-sided tape
