Rugby... just another fan.

Sharing some of my rugby pix, shot mostly during local tournament played in Perlis/Kedah.

Yeah some background are not so nice/clean. I am still learning about the game and what to capture-crop to show the action.

Used D200 with 70-200mm Sigma (sometime with 2x converter). Feel free to give it a spike if you wish. Thanks.

If you guys shooting rugby up north (Perlis, Kedah, Peneng, Perak), do let me know if I could tag a long.

Nice rugby action shots...don't see those very often

What was the biggest aperture for your 70-200? Was it possible to use smaller f number to isolate the bg better?

Erm... about the equipment. My D200 is already a dying 2years-old DSLR (without any AF servicing or cleaning) with more then 10600 clicks to date, and the Sigma 70-200mm is an older version before the Macro which has some technical issue at f/2.8 (back/front focusing), and if plus the sigma 2x converter won't do so much at f/5.6 max-equivalent aperture.

I tried my best to use smaller f-stop (maybe f/3.2-f/4, or if with TC at f/6.3-f/7) so that no so much back/front focusing. But with telephoto focal length, the DOF is not so wide even if we closed down some f-stop. I think.

D200 focusing is not so nice and tend to hunt with lot's of out of focus images.... bla bla bla... you get the idea. I know, speeding up the ISO will make noisier action images hehe! What to do. I need to maintain fast shutter speed (after so much shutter loss, I think not less then 1/400) so less moment blurr.

(Maybe I should get a D3/D700? - solved the high-noise problems. Who would like to sponser? hehe)

Anyway, I think I should try to practice more and get to know the sports better. I heard some rugby photographer (maybe amateur) used only D80-equivalent level DSLR to shoot and still produce great action moment.

Thanks for commenting, really appreciated it.

p/s: I think, for myself, a 200-400mm tele-zoom lens range is a good lens to shoot rugby if use only one DSLR. But that's just me.

i agree. not too many rugby fans or photographers out there. perhaps if they had rugby for ladies then it would be a whole different ballgame. for the spectators as well as photographers. ahaks.

nice shots. right in the heat of the action.
would prefer a little wider framing though. a little tight i think (like the flying tackle)... i don't do to many action/sport shots, but wouldnt it be better to go slightly wider then crop it into action ? jus my tots.
