Lucky with Cafenol B&W Developer.

Hi folks,

Here is my 1st attempt with the Cafenol recipe (instant coffee + washing soda and hypo to fix) on the Chinese Lucky SHD100 B&W film.
It won't replace the conventional developers for sure.
Its definitely a low contrast developer, but gives the old neg feel to the image.

Next will add some vitamin C to the formula.

What do you think ?

Red, you are right the fotos look soft - yes is a PP process problem, not the chemical kind, I think since the negs look sharp enuf under the loupe.
I was converting the negs by shooting digital via macro lens then PP the Canon CR2 to jpeg (yaks !) then invert to B&W using GIMP and storing in Picasa. It will be an easier workflow once I get hold a scanner.

I was trying out what I read from the Net and showing my 6yr old son how it can be done. It took me a while to locate the washing soda, since supermarkets don't stock them.
No secret formula, for 300ml of solutions, 5 teaspoon of instant coffee + 2 teaspoon of washing soda (aka soda ash aka sodium carbonate).

Dilute washing soda 1st, in 300ml of water stirring until clear then add in the kopi. Let the mixture sit for 5-10mins (in the chilled water bath) for the bubbles to disappear before gently pouring it into the film dev.container.

The thick "kopi or" takes 30mins in 20degC water bath, to develop. 1st minute constant but gentle agitation by inverting the container, then every 1/2 minute one inversion and tapping the container to dislodge any bubbles.

Usual stop bath, few drops of household vinegar.
Then fix with (60gm hypo to 500ml of H2O) dilution for 2mins, this can be re-use but the kopi or into the drain as cleaner, as the washing soda does that well.

The whole lot was kept at in the water bath, even use the chilled water for final rinse, this kept the solutions temperature fairly consistent from start to finish.

The fun bit is to experiment once you got the baseline solution & process working, so what I have written is not carved on stone.

Process aside, I shot my roll +1 stop by setting the ISO to 50 on the camera, else I read, the neg image will be rather light.
Next will try the ISO50, ISO100, ISO200, ISO400 just to see what the images look like.

Try it at your own risk , since I am not accepting any responsibilities.

Managed to find a shop to sell ascorbic acid powder (aka Vitamin C). Will try this with the cafenol next, I am glad the Lucky film is fairly cheap even sent from China. Also I have some Lucky & Shanghai 120mm which I will try next. Its a shame they are rated ISO100.

Kopi Or, smells quite good, non-toxic but do not drink :

The 1st glimpse, my son focused on me rather then the negs ! :

Yup, there are quite a few creative ppl out there in the Net.
Since I found this shop full of chemical compounds, the next project will be make my own proper film developer, again combing the net for the ideal recipe.

I just love B&W !

Please experiment & feedback so that we can arrive at some optimum solution & process. Other films, makes of coffee - instant or percolated or the kopi tiam style.

Forget to mention, just use normal water not boiling water to make the kopi or.
Another common mistake that one can make is to use sodium bicarbonate which is baking powder - its not the same. No sugar or milk either.

But for the ultimate, residue/contaminant free, one can use 100% distilled (battery) water + wetting agent on the final rinse for clean negatives from dried water marks or even through out the whole process, only couple of gallons
