>>> My Shangri-la trip (part 1) - Zhongdian <<<

Zhongdian, known as Gyalthang in Tibetan, recently changed its name to Shangri-La. Perched on a plateau at an elevation of 3300 meters, dotted with beautiful hills, flowers and alpine lakes, the region of Zhongdian offers great possibilities for trek, botanical exploration, as well as discovery of Tibetan culture. The picturesque Tibetan villages on the outskirts of Zhongdian still keep unique customs and traditions, attracting many independent travelers. Most travelers stay in Zhongdian for one or two days, but some would stay there for a week.

The highway between Zhongdian and Deqing cuts through the Baimang Nature Reserve, and most of the scenic spots are located on either side of the highway. If you take the bus from Zhongdian to Diqing, the natural beauty can be seen from the bus. But the best way to really appreciate this spot is to hire a car from Zhongdian and stop at the reserve en route to Meili Mountain.

13 The highlight of Zhongdian is the Ganden Sumtseling Gompa, a huge Tibetan monastery. Located a few kilometers north of town.

Great stuff as usual, Stan. The Zhongdian-Shangri-la route is top on my list of places to visit in the next few months.

Oh wow, thanks for sharing, Stan.
Beautiful colours, a bit lomo-esque. Love that farmstead.
And the background hills in #10 .... yat lau (Q's trademark ).
You were able to zoom in that much or you walked up to the farm?
Little Zhongdian looked like having shower ....
