Dang, I'm really interested too! When I backpacked to Vietnam last year (back when I still don't have my DSLR yet), I went to:

HCMC
Dalat (I love this place)
Nha Trang
Hoi An
Hue
Hanoi

Let's just say the two 12-hour bus rides are crazy.

My friends and I didn't get to do Sapa as we didn't have time.. so yeah I'm pretty interested in the Sapa leg too. But not sure if I should skip a few classes or if it's clashing with my exams etc yet.

Okay, finally drawn up an itinerary. My suggestion is for you guys (those who are confirmed going) to meet me in Hanoi on March 21 (Sat). There is an early morning flight from KL so you should reach there by afternoon.

Here is a tentative schedule:

March 21, Sat
12 noon: Reach Hanoi for lunch.
1-2pm: Lunch
2-6pm: R&R (I can arrange a hotel whereby you can take shower, rest etc. Maybe just book 1 room)
6-8pm: Dinner around town
8.30pm: Minivan pick-up to train station
10pm: Train departs Hanoi (overnight journey 10 hrs)

March 22, Sun
7am: Arrive in town of Lao Cai. Bus pick us to go to Bac Ha (colourful market for the local ethnic tribe)
9am: Arrive in Bac Ha. Have breakfast and walkabout. It's a small market with lots of interesting things to shoot, so won't get lost.
12noon: Lunch in Bac Ha. Bus send us from Bac Ha to Sapa.
3pm: Arrive in Sapa town, leave luggage (non-valuables) in hotel storage area. Trek to Hmong village (pls carry only light gear, light tripod etc).
6pm: Dinner and overnight at Ta Van village.

March 23, Mon
7am: Breakfast in village, followed by trekking to another village.
1pm: Back to Sapa town for lunch. Free and easy, explore town.
Overnight in Sapa hotel.

March 24, Tue
AM: Free and easy. For those interested, we can take motorbike taxi to scenic spot just outside town to take landscape shots.
12 noon: Lunch in Sapa
3pm: Bus pickup to Lao Cai town.
6pm: Depart Lao Cai for overnight journey to Hanoi.

March 25, Wed
6am: Arrive Hanoi.

HOW MANY OF YOU WANT TO SPEND A DAY OR TWO IN HANOI FOR STREET SHOOTING, MAKAN ETC?

My tentative return date is either March 26 or 27.

COSTS
AirAsia fare, you can find out your own.

Hotel rates in Hanoi - kindly let me know your preference. For US$15-20 a night, can get pretty decent room. For those who want 5-star, let me know. I can get you discounted rates (we call it "media rates") at InterContinental Hanoi Westlake or Sofitel. Sofitel's location is more ideal, walking distance to Hoan Kiem lake.

Food - street food in Hanoi is equivalent in price to KL. Western/tourist food at restaurants are cheaper.

Sapa tour - Will confirm later as our itinerary is a bit different (with excursion to Bac Ha). But should be roughly less than US$100 (RM360) for a 3D/2N trip INCLUSIVE of train tix, hotel and village stay, tour guide service etc. Some meals you have to cover your own.

does anyone here want to join in halfway..

When Pete first posted this trip, I was amongst the earliest to indicate my keeness to join. However along the way there were other events that came up and not hearing any updates on this trip, I'd also signed up for another event. I may not be able to join in on 21st/22nd March and am planning to fly in from KL on 22nd night and join the group on 23rd morning and staying on till28th/29th March.
Anyone have the same intention so we can go together?

Good question. Okay, cut off date is Feb 27. For those who wants to go, I will need you to place USD100 with me to secure the Sapa tour. Cos I will need to pay the tour operator to secure train tix etc.
