walkaround lens. Sigma 17-70 f2.8 or Tamron 17-50 f2.8?

Hi all,

i am using canon 500D.I own only a 18-50mm kit lens and the 50mm f1.8 prime lens currently.

After 1y plus, i am thinking of changing a walkaround lens. i face many problem when doing indoor shooting (portrait or casual family gathering), I also would like to get a longer zoom lenght when i go travel/outing.

i was considering Canon 18-200mm previously but the comment for the lens is not good for the photo quality and lens built, too heavy for me as a walk around lens too.

Friend recommend Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 and claim the the photo quality is good and it can solve the low light indoor prob. I heard about Sigma 17-70mm f2.8 too.. price is around RM1500-1800 which within my budget.

Or should i get a 18-200 lens and opt for a external flash to solve the indoor low lighting prob???

Can someone brighten me with your experience? THANK YOU!!!

walkaround lens. Sigma 17-70 f2.8 or Tamron 17-50 f2.8?

Hi, I am Jeffrey. I have tried both Sigma 17-70 OS & tamron 17-50 f2.8 (non VC version). If you want very sharp picture. Get the Tamron, If you want image stabilizer with an extra 20mm in focal length. Get Sigma. The other choice is try to get a used Canon 15-85IS f3.5-5.6 lens. This lens is sharp. For all this three lens, the best sharpness is from f5.6 above to f8. Depend on what kind of photo you prefer. Potrait or snap shoot or landscape? For potrait, prime lens is still the best.
My opinion as below:
1) Tamron A16 no VC version - Picture shoot at f4 above was very sharp. Price: RM1350-1400.
2) Tamron B005 Vc version, also must use f4 above then picture will sharp but sharpness still loose to it's A16. price: RM 1750
3) Sigma 17-70 OS version - at 17mm at f2.8 indoor shooting, sharpness is acceptable only with a bit soft too but got OS support. Reduce to F4/5.6 then is sharp.
4) canon 15-85mm IS version - this is the best walkabout lens, sharpness is as good as tamron A16. Price: RM Unknown. you can check with the shop.

do look at the new Sigma 17-50 2.8 OS also, price range about 2.4k for import set. IQ is almost as good as the Canon 17-55 2.8 from many reviews

- better flare control
- better CA control
- cheaper

I'd go for Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8.

Do bear in mind Sigma 17-70mm is not constant f/2.8 like the Tamron, it's f/2.8-4.5.

sigma 17-70OS and Tamron B005

sorry for my late reply. If your cash was tight. Try sigma 17-70OS. Slightly cheaper than Tamron B005. If u want good and cheaper price. Its f2.8 at 17mm was enough to shot at indoor unless the light was deem. Also can try canon 18 - 135 but apecture f3:5-5.6. But u can add a flash on it for indoor shot. About Canon 18-200, i prefer canon 18-135 this lens bcos cheaper price and was a steel mount too for both. Canon18-200, range 135 after don't aspect to have same PQ as 18-135 in its range. U can notice pictureis softer. Tamron B005 constant apecture + VC. Its VC was fantastic but noisy, f2.8 can shot at indoor without a flash bcos of its good VC. If u got flash or your indoor light was bright enough. Tamron A16 is a good choice as its price was only RM1350 for new piece. Like very much good DOF. Try full frame canon old 5D + tamron 28-75 f2.8 / 50mm f1.8/f1.4 or 85mm f1.8. U will get suprised.
